Year 6 News

Term 3 has begun with no slow start! The students have jumped straight into action and have truly demonstrated their leadership skills. The Year 6 teachers would like to commend them on an excellent start to the term.
Inquiry
Continuing with our unit of inquiry, 'How We Organise Ourselves', the Year 6 students have been working tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming Year 6 Mega Market. The central idea for this unit is, Our needs and wants influence economic activities.
This has inspired students to investigate the wants of the rest of the school community, gathering data to guide their market stall ideas and decisions.

Numeracy
The Mega Market has also become the focus of our numeracy and literacy learning. In mathematics, students have been exploring financial literacy, budgeting, and real-life data collection, applying these skills directly to their market planning. This hands-on approach is helping them see the practical value of their learning while building confidence in problem-solving and decision-making.
Please enjoy all these student recounts from the students:
The mega market is our fund raising for our year 6 gradation. On the mega market we learnt that for a business it need to have a logo and a jingle like ''finger liking good'' as an example. We have learnt that the mega market has been too long in the past so we changed that to help you.
We have been working on our mega market stall for about the past 4 weeks making our logo and our jingle our jingle is '' Come to Mega Chunks to test your luck'' our stall is a choc n toss which is a game where you throw a coin and hope to land on a chocolate or book our stall is as good as gold l would like to thank everyone who has donated to your mega market thanks to them we didn't need to spend so much money one our mega market.

This week the year six's are hosting a Mega market to raise money for our graduation. We started by choosing our groups and what we would be making by having a vote in our groups. My group of three almost instantly knew making honey joys was the way to go. To anyone that doesn't know what honey joys are they are these sweet treats made from cornflakes, honey, butter and a pinch of sugar. Next we needed to make letters to ask for donations and in the end we got many donations that all of us were very thankful for. After we had to start planning what we need to do and when. My group decided that we needed to make a background to make it look more appealing and no day is better to do it than a curriculum day. Once we finished, it looked amazing!

This term the year 6s have been working on their stalls for their Mega Market. They are going to present their stall out for all the children at our school. We are raising money for our year 6 graduation. We will be giving 10% to a charity. My group and I have been working on our stall for the mega market. The stall we have been working on is a basketball game called New Knocking Hoops. Me and my group have been painting, cutting out cardboard and printing out posters for our stall. The Market will have fun games, yummy food and refreshing cold drinks.

Hi my name is Billy and I am going to talk about my experience with my group about the Year 6 Megamarket. My topic is about how we sent out letters to shops and asked for donations for our shop or activity. My group sent letters to Coles Mentone, Sandringham Augustus, Gelato Lab Black Rock and Highett Woollies. My group had an ice cream stall so we asked for ice cream and some toppings. We were so lucky that Gelato Lab gave my stall 10 litres of ice cream! We are so grateful for those donations from Gelato Lab Black Rock.

Once we got back after the school holidays we had HEAPS of donations waiting for us and my group got a whole car boot full of lollies, well 95% of them. We were absolutely BLOWN AWAY with the amount of lolly bags we can make with that amount of lollies. We spent 3 full lunchtimes bagging lollies and we ended up making over 400 lolly bags. Then we had to design our poster and logo to advertise our products in the Newsletter and around the school. After school we made our game and searched for extra prizes that we could hand out. After all that we were finally done but we still had to make a cash box and get our floats together, but that was probably the easiest job yet.

Sustainability Excursion
On Wednesday 23rd of July, the sustainability captains went with the year threes to the bayside nursery. Its about 2 kilometres away from the school, and they had a program ready just for us. They took us on a tour through their greenhouses, showing us the different types of flora and fauna that grows well in the Melbourne weather, and we learnt native plants are used to bad soil, because Australia doesn't have many volcanic eruptions. Next we learnt how to sow seeds, and even planted a few of our own.

On the 23rd of July, the Sustainability captains walked down to the Beaumaris Nature Nursery with 3C. We learnt that the plants that they collect are only from the Bayside area and that volunteers come on Thursdays to help plants new seedlings and clean up the garden areas. We had an awesome time and I would highly recommend it as a place to go with your family and friends.

Carlton Respects
For the past few week's the year 6/5's have had the Carlton respect's incursion. Each class was a different week 6c and 5c went first with 6b and 6a going together, the rest of the years 5's went last.
We did a number of rotations with some of them being challenges and games. We learnt about stereotypes while also learning about Carlton player's. We looked into what makes a good team and about our emotions. At the end we played a super fun game where we had to make the biggest tower out of blue tack and icy pole sticks. Their where 2 prizes to win one was for whoever had the biggest tower and the other was for who ever's team worked the best. My team won a prize and it was for working the best as a group.
