Literacy
After finishing the novels Dirrarn and Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler, students have gained a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture, connection to Country, identity, and some of the challenges faced. Through the journeys of the characters, they have explored important themes such as respect, resilience, family, and standing up for what is right, supported by our class discussions and activities. These stories provide powerful insights into contemporary and traditional Aboriginal experiences, encouraging empathy, cultural awareness and allowing students to make connections.
This week, students have now moved on to the picture book Waves by Donna Rawlins and Heather Potter, where they will shift their focus to global stories of migration and refuge. This new text will help them explore themes of courage, hope, and belonging through real stories of people who have crossed seas in search of safety and a new home. Students have already delved deep into the imagery, helping to support the inferential and literal comprehension.
Maths
At the end of last week, students have wrapped up their learning on fractions and decimals for this term, building a solid understanding of how to compare, order, and apply them which will link to Term 3 learning where they will continue these topics. They’ve developed confidence in working with parts of a whole and understanding place value beyond the decimal point.
As we move forward, the focus shifts to time—specifically, converting between 12- and 24-hour time formats and reading timetables. These are essential real-world skills that help students make sense of everyday schedules, such as reading transport timetables or planning events.
