Grade 2

Hello Grade 2 families

Even though it has been a short fortnight, the students have still been very busy with their learning!

Literacy

In spelling, we have looked at the digraph ‘oi’ and ‘oy’ (as in coin and toy). Students learnt that if the ‘oy’ sound is at the end of the word we use the letters o and y, and if the ‘oi’ sound is in the middle of a word we use the letters o and i. We also explored the digraph ‘ph’ as in phone, trigraphs ‘ear’ and ‘eer’ as in clear and steer along with two new tricky words - tomorrow and through

During our comprehension and fluency lessons we have been focusing on the visualising strategy. Students were asked to close their eyes as teachers read a text aloud to them, and afterwards they were required to draw what pictures they painted in their minds to create visuals of what they were reading. Now, we are moving on to the questioning strategy. Students are beginning to use the question words; who, when, where, what, why and how to ask questions before reading, during and after reading a text to help understand what it is they are reading about.

Maths

Maths this fortnight has seen us continue learning and practising mental strategies for Addition and Subtraction. The grade 2’s have shown a high level of enthusiasm towards using the column method to solve problems and it has been a highlight for the grade 2 teachers to observe!

Let them show you at home using these equations:

We even explored addition problems with carrying and subtraction problems with borrowing!

See if they can show you at home using these equations:

Writing

For the remainder of the term the grade 2’s are participating in a poetry unit where they explore and create their own Acrostic and Haiku Poems.

Acrostic Poems - are where the first letter of each line spells out a word, generally the poem’s theme.

Haiku Poems - are 3 lines long and follow a 5-7-5 rule (5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables).

So far students have written their own Acrostic and Haiku poems, using their names and other topics such as seasons, family members and animals.

Check out some of the grade 2 poetry below!

Thanks for your continued support at home.

Warm regards

The Year 2 Team.
