Catholic Identity

See you on Sunday!

Back by popular demand, the Family Mass and Choir will be this Sunday at 8:30am! Since the eisteddfod, the Choir have been practising weekly and we are very excited to have all our St Joseph’s Families at Mass on Sunday. Thank you to the students and families for volunteering to take an extra special part in our Mass through reading and offertory.

Year 6 Mass with the Bishop

Each year, the Year 6 students and their teachers gather as a whole Diocese with our Bishop for the celebration of Mass. This is a special and exciting time and families are encouraged to embrace active participation of their children. You can support your child in their preparation for this significant event by listening to the following songs at home.

Second call for all Woodworkers and Carpenters!

After some consultation and feedback, we are hoping to reach out to our community and find someone who is able to help with making this vision a reality. We would like to construct and install a wooden cross with the emblem of the Sisters of St Joseph in the doorway of the Mindful Centre.

The Emblem reminds the Sisters of St Joseph of the importance of Jesus, Mary, Joseph and John the Baptist in their lives. The Cross is a symbol of the religious name Mary called herself - 'Mary of the Cross,‛ when she became a Sister of St Joseph. The A and M (drawn over the top of each other), stand for Ave Maria.

If you or someone you know is able to share their gift and craft with our school community, please reach out to Mr Walker via the school office.

Thank you in advance!

What does High Quality Religious Education look like across our school?

Last week, I had the great privilege to take Kindergarten to the church as they begin their new unit of learning. The focus of their learning is around all the sacred objects in the church. The kindergarten teachers wanted to ensure that there were meaningful connections made between the objects and the students. We discussed each object and took some photos beside them. The students were very engaged and I thank their teachers for supporting them in this learning. These photos will now form a significant part of their ongoing learning.

What is my child learning about in Religious Education?

In my last newsletter, I shared what Kindergarten to Year 2 students were learning about in Religious Education. This week, I will share what Year 4,5 and 6 students will be learning about. I encourage you to ask your child/ren questions about what they are learning about in Religious Education to consolidate their understanding.

Year 3 students will

  • retell the key events of the Ascension and Pentecost

  • describe how the apostles and the early Christians continued the mission of Jesus, strengthened by the Holy Spirit

  • identify how they continue the mission of Jesus today, strengthened by the Holy Spirit

  • name the Trinity as Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Year 4 students will:

  • describe times when the Holy Spirit gave courage to the followers of Jesus

  • articulate how the saints needed courage to spread the Good News

  • identify situations when they need to speak and act with courage

Year 5 students will:

  • describe the mission of Jesus in Luke 4:16-22

  • name and describe the ‘fruits of the Spirit’

  • identify how the good works of individuals reflect the presence of the Holy Spirit

Year 5 have already displayed engagement in their learning by recreating the “tongues of fire” and labeling the fruits of the Holy Spirit!
