Connect: Year 2

Hello Grade Two Families,

It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the end of another busy and eventful term! We are looking forward to meeting with you next week to discuss your child's progress! Despite the hustle and bustle, students have remained engaged and enthusiastic, and we’re proud of all they’ve accomplished. As we head into the break, we’d like to thank you for your continued support and wish everyone a safe and restful holiday!

Thanks,

Hailee, Dave, and Emma

Little Learners Online Platform REMINDER

We encourage you to access the Little Learners online platform regularly to find appropriately levelled texts for your child to practise their reading. We have noticed a significantly large number of the Grade 2 Cohort have not accessed any books online- please let us know if you require support to get online or if you would prefer physical books to be sent home. Daily reading is the best way for your child to improve their accuracy, fluency and comprehension.

Key Dates for the Calendar:

DATEEVENT
Friday 4th JulyLast Day of Term 2, early finish at 2:30pm
Monday 21st JulyFirst Day of Term 3

REMINDERS:

- As the weather gets wetter and muddier, please send your child with a change of clothes (including shorts, undies, socks) and a plastic bag to keep the wet clothes in.

- Learning starts promptly in the morning. Please remember to take/remind your child to use the toilet before the 8.45am bell so nothing important is missed.

- We are noticing a number of students are requiring ongoing support to tie their shoelaces and this is becoming a big distraction in the classroom. Here is a handy video they can watch to practise - EASIEST shoe tying trick ever

Celebration of Learning:

Literacy

This term, we’ve been continuing to revise long vowel sounds and explore different spelling patterns. We've been using our sound fists to stretch out words and break them into syllables. In writing, we’ve been focusing on building stronger sentences by adding who, what, where, when and why to make them more interesting and detailed.

READING COMPREHENSION: now that many of the Grade 2 students are decoding (reading the words) texts with growing confidence, we would like for them to increase their comprehension (understanding of the text) skills when reading. Over the holidays, we would appreciate if you could use the below 'Reading Comprehension Questions' grid to engage in a discussion about what your child is reading. We will also hand a physical copy of this sheet out at Parent Teacher Conferences next week!

Numeracy

We’ve had a busy term in Maths! We’ve been investigating length by measuring with uniform informal units and getting quicker with our number facts by creating number bonds for 5 to 9 using our trusty MS blocks. We’ve also been expanding our place value knowledge and exploring 4-digit numbers. It’s been great to see the students thinking like mathematicians and growing in confidence!

We have noticed that our Grade 2 Cohort are wandering during playtime and not engaging in games or activities. We believe this is contributing to the issues students are having outside and would like to support them to have more focused play when in the yard. We plan to set up some games and activities for Grade 2 students during recess and lunch and are on the hunt for some donations such as blocks, cars, dolls, figurines (ideally things that are hardy, waterproof and do not contain tiny parts). If you want to make some space at home, we will gladly take them off your hands so PLEASE send them our way!

After listening to the Dreamtime story How the Birds Got Their Colours, we designed our own vibrant bird artworks using bold patterns and colourful feathers. Each one turned out unique and eye-catching—just like the birds in the story!
