Grade 1 & 2

Term 3 - Week 5

It’s now the middle of Term 3 and already we have had some amazing learning and discovering throughout our learning spaces. All the children have participated in and enjoyed all the activities.

Our Religious Education concept for this term is ‘Imagine’. Jesus used stories called parables to teach about God's dream for the world (reign of God). He used his imagination to teach the people in his time and we use our imagination to understand his messages for our lives in today’s world. We’ve looked closely at ‘The Parable of the Sower’, using our imagination- Is God the sower, sowing the seeds on us, the soil? Are we the sower, and what we say and do makes a difference to others, or are we the seed, thrown by God into circumstances of varying possibility. Facing defeat at times, finding fertile ground at other times?

Our Inquiry concept is Biology thinking about: How do living things grow and adapt in a changing world? How do we accept and adapt to the cycle of life? In the second week we went for a walk to Jardwa Park. All the children respectfully and carefully searched for and observed many different kinds of insects, bugs and kinds of life living there.

During Literacy, the children have continued with the biology theme and have read and discovered many important facts about insects and Australian animals by focusing on Information Texts. They have even written their own Information Texts in various ways.

We had two visitors from the dentist come on Thursday, 7th August. Ebonie and Jane spoke about the need to keep our gums, teeth and tongue clean. We need our teeth for breathing, eating and speaking. They demonstrated brushing our teeth in circular and up and down motion 2 times a day. An interesting fact that we all learnt was that you ‘spit, don’t rinse!’ We need to keep the toothpaste there to continue fighting the sugar bugs. When our toothbrushes get ragged and tired, we need a new one but, also, if we have been sick because our sick bugs will still be there.

Last week we had the great pleasure to watch a wonderful show about ‘Sleeping Beauty’, performed by Alpha. Our children were invited to join in throughout the show and even danced with the actors. The theme was about making choices, choices that aren’t so good or choices to show ‘love’.

This week was ‘Book Week’. On Monday we all dressed up as our favourite characters and then enjoyed listening to and doing activities for four wonderful story books. What a great day it was!

It has been an amazing four weeks and we look forward to our next four weeks and the exciting activities ahead of us, including our excursion to the Halls Gap Zoo.
