Social and Emotional Learning

As part of my role as Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader I am fortunate to work with students across the school focusing on their Social and Emotional Learning. Recently I have been in working with the Grade 3/4 students. We read the book 'Each Kindness'.

Each Kindness, written by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by E. B. Lewis, is a poignant picture book that explores the impact of kindness—and the pain of missed opportunities to show it.

The story is narrated by a young girl named Chloe, who, along with her friends, chooses to exclude a new classmate named Maya. Maya is quiet, wears second hand clothes, and tries to connect with the other students, but they reject her repeatedly. One day, Maya stops coming to school, and Chloe’s teacher gives a lesson about how small acts of kindness can ripple out and change the world.

As Chloe reflects on her behaviour, she realises the weight of her choices and is left with the deep regret of an opportunity lost. The story ends on a sombre but powerful note, emphasising that sometimes, we don’t get a second chance to make things right.

The Grade 3/4 students were given the choice to rewrite the ending by changing a moment in the book where Chloe could have shown empathy and kindness or write a diary entry from the point of Maya. Below are some example of their work.
