Learning Space News

Year 1/2

What a fantastic term it has been! The Year 1 and 2 students have had a wonderfully busy and productive Term 2, filled with exciting learning experiences both in and beyond the learning space.

English

Students have shown tremendous growth in both reading and writing. They have strengthened their decoding skills and made great strides in comprehension - moving beyond literal understanding to using clues from the text to answer inferential questions.

It has been especially rewarding to see students take greater ownership of their learning. They’ve been regularly reflecting on their progress and working towards individual reading and writing goals.

A major highlight this term was our visit to Springvale Library for National Simultaneous Storytime, where we had the pleasure of meeting the author and illustrator of The Truck Cat.

“ I loved listening to the author read the story.” - Susie

“The illustrator showed us how to draw a cat.” - Chelsy

This inspiring visit aligned perfectly with our narrative writing unit. Students channelled their creativity into planning, drafting, editing, and publishing their own imaginative stories. Our budding authors have produced incredible work, which is proudly displayed throughout our learning space and will also be shared with families via Seesaw.

Mathematics

Students explored addition and subtraction using a variety of strategies, including number lines, jumping strategies, and partitioning. The concept of 'fact families' was introduced, helping students understand number relationships and strengthen their mental math skills.

It has been wonderful to see students grow in both confidence and accuracy, applying their learning to real-world situations and problem-solving tasks.

Inquiry

The focus of this term was guided by the question: "What makes a great park?" This hands-on unit blended geography, design, and critical thinking as students explored both natural and built features of outdoor spaces.

The unit began with a memorable excursion to Alex Wilkie Reserve, where students investigated how parks balance function and fun. Back in the learning space, they used their knowledge to plan, design, and construct their very own dream park dioramas.

The teachers are incredibly proud of the thoughtful, imaginative, and well-crafted results. These projects reflect a strong understanding of design principles, community needs, and environmental awareness.

🎉 Families are warmly invited to our Dream Park Diorama Expo! 📅 Monday, 23rd June | 🕝 2:15 PM - Join us to celebrate our students’ creativity, learning, and collaboration.

Student Voice & Leadership

This term, we’ve placed a strong focus on student agency, encouraging learners to take active roles in shaping their classroom environment.

One exciting initiative has been the introduction of Role Group Captains—a leadership opportunity that empowers students to contribute to the smooth operation of daily routines.

Each captain has been equipped with a clipboard of responsibilities, ranging from organising learning materials to supporting peers and maintaining shared spaces.

👏 Congratulations to our new Role Group Captains.  We look forward to seeing them thrive in these exciting roles.

  • 1/2A – Emily K
  • 1/2B – Selina
  • 1/2C – Teddy
  • 1/2D – Tyson
