It has been another productive week for everyone in Trades!

Building and Construction – Extras Class Project

Students have commenced site works for a concrete hardstand using an innovative plastic grid system designed to reduce the project's carbon footprint. This system minimises concrete use by up to 60% compared to a traditional slab, while still providing a compressive strength of 107 MPa at just 40mm thick. By reducing excess concrete requirements, this approach significantly lowers material usage and environmental impact. It is estimated that implementing this system for the planned 80m² hardstand will result in a 40% reduction in carbon emissions.

So far, students have been developing essential skills in leveling, measuring volumes and surface areas, and operating plant and equipment such as the Kanga and plate compactor.

Metals

Students have been focusing on lathe work and welding, refining their precision machining and fabrication skills.

Furnishings

Students have been practicing woodworking joints, improving their craftsmanship and accuracy in furniture construction.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

All students have now completed their trades inductions and new students have received their Trades bag, along with:

✔️ 2 pairs of safety glasses

✔️ Hearing protection

✔️ Gloves

✔️ 2 pens

Students must bring their PPE to every trades session and ensure all equipment remains in good condition. If PPE is lost or damaged, replacements can be purchased from the Trades office. A reminder that protective equipment is not to be shared between students.

Additionally, for Construction work conducted outdoors, the same expectations apply as on the farm—students must bring and wear either a College bucket hat or akubra during Term One and Four to ensure sun safety.

Thank you to all students for their hard work this week! Keep up the great effort, and we look forward to another successful week in Trades.
