What have we been up to in class.

Year 10 Science

The Year 10 science classes extracted DNA from strawberries, bananas and kiwi fruits to determine which one has more. Did you know that most plants have multiple copies of their chromosomes? Which fruit do you think contains the most DNA?

Year 11 Plant Production Systems

The Year 11students are undertaking a production project as a part of their Plant Production Systems curriculum. This has meant they have had a weekly visit to Horticulture to firstly plant a variety of bean seeds and then to care for, observe and record their growth. This production project will continue throughout the term. Students love being outside of the classroom and it is great for them to be able to apply the theory concepts they have been learning in class to real food production. We are very appreciative of the cooperation and assistance we receive from farm staff who welcome our classes and assist us in whatever way they can.  It is fantastic to have access to such amazing real-life resources.

OLNA Schedule

Term One OLNA Testing for Year 11 and 12 students will commence in Week 4 (Wednesday 26 February) and will conclude in Week 6 (Tuesday 11 March). Last week I attached to the Weekly Wrap the specific schedule and information about the online practice tests that are available to assist students. Please don’t hesitate to contact the College if you missed the schedule or would like further information about OLNA.

Year 10 students are not involved in this first round of OLNA. Students that didn’t get to have their first attempt at OLNA late last year at their previous school, will have an opportunity early next term. All Year 10 students will then have a second opportunity to achieve their OLNA later in the year. I encourage all students to continue to work on their core reading, writing and numeracy skills, to best equip them for the OLNA assessments when they get the next opportunity to sit them. Please note that once the students have passed a category of OLNA, they do not need to complete further tests in that OLNA category.

OLNA Tutorials

Year 11 and 12 students who are yet to pass one or more components of OLNA are encouraged to attend an OLNA tutorial on Tuesday evenings during prep with Mrs Pfitzner. Day students are very welcome to attend if they can but are asked to please let Mrs Pfitzner know that they plan to come back into the College for the tutorial.
