Year 9 News

My name is Ryan Mayo, and I have the privilege of being the year 9 team leader for this year. I am excited to work closely with both students and parents to have a successful year.
I want to recognise the hard work of both students and parents in starting the year strong. It has been a successful beginning, with high attendance and students coming well-prepared for learning.

As previous years we will be continuing the use of Kurnai Positive Acknowledgements (KPA’s), it has been fantastic to see students settling back into the Kurnai Learning Community and being acknowledged for their efforts within the classroom.

Camp
Year 9 camp will be a discovery camp to Melbourne, ran through the company DOXA. Students will get the opportunity to explore venues such as the Queen Victoria market, Melbourne Cricket Ground and Eureka Skydeck. As discussed with students in week 3, DOXA has limited the available spots to 60 students per camp. It was discussed with students that there will be an expression of interest released in the coming week, however, if more than 60 students are interested, a range of things will be used to decide eligibility including:
- Learning Behaviour Updates (LBU’s)
- Attendance
- Suspensions
- Trusted member of our team
I acknowledge that the limited spaces available may cause some frustration for parents and students. If you have any questions, please contact me via email or call 5132 3700.
Athletics Day
On March 4th, our college-wide athletics event will take place. Year 9 students will have the opportunity to participate in friendly competitions, including events like footy kicking and the 100m sprint. Students are encouraged to wear clothing and accessories in their schoolhouse colours.
Remember to pack a hat, sunscreen, and a jacket - to be prepared for Victoria’s unpredictable weather!
NAPLAN
In Weeks 7 and 8 of this term, the year 9 students will have their last NAPLAN testing of their schooling careers. The students have been learning all of the relevant content for NAPLAN testing and how to navigate the tricky website that the testing is conducted through. I acknowledge that this testing may bring up anxiety and unease.
We will be trying our best in core classes to support students through the wave of emotions felt during NAPLAN. If you have any questions, please contact me via email.
Expectations
As a cohort, we have been focusing on key expectations for our Year 9 students. The three main areas we are working on are: arriving at school on time, bringing all necessary equipment to class, and wearing the correct uniform.
If a student is struggling to meet these expectations, you may receive communication from me, Julie Garden, or another member of our Year 9 team.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
