Library News

Hello Chatswood Community,

This week, borrowing has officially begun, and books are already flying off the shelves! It’s wonderful to see our students excited to borrow again. Many have eagerly approached me with requests for new books to be added to our collection. Rest assured, we’ll be heading out soon to expand our already impressive library!

Library Monitors and Interns

This year, we’re introducing a new approach to our library monitor system, and I’d love to share the details with you.

We’re trialing a library intern program for students in years 3 to 5. Each class will select two to three students to serve as library monitors. These students will have the same responsibilities as our year 6 library monitors but will carry them out only during their class library lesson.

The goal of this program is to give younger students an opportunity to experience leadership responsibilities within the school. The selected interns will develop organisational, communication, and technology skills while engaging with their peers as library leaders.

This initiative officially launches next week! A huge thank you to the teachers for helping with the selection process.

Loan Notices

If you receive a library notice about books from last year, please don’t panic! Our priority is simply getting the books back into the collection, not seeking financial reimbursement.

We kindly ask that you check around your home—under the couch, under the beds, inside closets, or any of those places where forgotten things tend to hide. If you’re unable to find the book, simply write a note on your child’s loan notice and return it. We’ll do our best to locate it on our end, as books sometimes slip between the cracks. Only after all possible avenues have been explored will we follow up with you.

Kindergarten and Stage 1 Readers

At the library, we’re here to support your child’s literacy journey. To help our youngest borrowers transition into library use, we introduce borrowing in stages.

Kindergarten students can borrow one book per week, and we encourage them to select from our junior fiction section. This section contains thousands of picture books designed to build early reading skills. We also have bilingual books and kid-friendly Disney books, making it easy to find engaging and accessible reading material. Books are loaned for two weeks at a time.

Stage 1 students can borrow two books per week, and we expand their borrowing options. In addition to junior fiction, they can explore:

  • Fast fiction – short, easy-to-read chapter books
  • Junior non-fiction – beginner-friendly informational books

These additional choices help broaden their exposure to literature and foster a love of reading.

If you feel your child is ready for more advanced books, please speak with their classroom teacher. The library team will gladly accommodate any teacher recommendations to enhance your child's reading experience.

That’s all from us this week! Thank you for your ongoing support of our wonderful library.

Kind Regards,

The Library Team
