GRIP Student Leadership Program

On Tuesday 18 February, eight Year Eleven students had the opportunity to attend the GRIP Student Leadership Program, hosted at the Albany Entertainment Centre. The focus of the workshop was to develop skills that could be used to make a positive impact on issues within our school community.

The day started off with brainstorming how our school could improve and what needed to change for our school to achieve success and reach its full potential. We discussed how school events help students feel connected and how people with different strengths contribute to events in different ways. Not only did this course build leadership skills, it also developed confidence. Everyone had to contribute to group discussions and share their ideas with people from other schools, and some people were even invited onstage to participate in various activities that involved acting, guessing games, and singing. The day pushed many people out of their comfort zones and gave them more confidence in themselves; for others, it was a place to grow even more.

Throughout the day, we had many community and team-building games that became a competition between the two sides of the room. We played a few versions of charades, like Guess the Country, a follow-the-leader dance break, and a game called Complete the List, where we had to gather various items as a team. When the Host said we had to find shoelaces that WEREN’T black or white, we had to work with other schools, or we wouldn’t have had a chance. One of the most memorable moments from the day was when Ava Marmion won a competition. As the victor, she was invited onstage to give a stunning karaoke performance of Party in the USA

To finish the course, all the students had to brainstorm their own leadership tips and pass them on to three other people. Everyone was actively thinking of ways to be the best leader, but the one that stood out for the Hosts was: Be the change you want to see in your world. We often make assumptions. We assume a problem isn’t our responsibility, so it never gets solved. But do we still have the right to complain about that problem if we never attempted to solve it ourselves?

Leading by example is a necessary quality to gain respect and encourage others around you to change. The GRIP Student Leadership Course was an incredible experience. Even if you aren’t interested in student leadership, I recommend taking the chance and signing up next time something like this comes along. Thank you to the teachers who organised this event for us, and to Mr Emberson who supervised, and let us buy food from Hazbeanz café.

Media News

Adam Morris, local filmmaker and co-founder of Kinjarling Films, came and spoke to our Years Ten, Eleven and Twelve Drama and Media students this week. He spoke to students about ideation, scriptwriting and the rehearsal process with actors. Adam ran some activities with the students coming up with film ideas, log lines and what they could make locally. It was a great morning. Adam is also looking for Extras for his upcoming film. More information will be shared about this later, so if you’re interested in being in a film watch this space for more information.

It was really nice to see someone who’s made film into a career and is so open about its ups and downs. He had some great stories and tips.

Grace Eckersley | Year Ten student

Having the chance to talk with an experienced film director about story construction, writing scripts, working with actors under pressure, and coming up with original ideas was an experience I truly value. I especially found his advice on treating ideas with neutrality helpful in reducing burnout and keeping creativity fresh.
