Year 11 VM Numeracy - Moonlit Sanctuary Excursion
On 24th June 2024, 74 of the Year 11 VCE VM (Vocational Major) Numeracy students and 4 of the VPC (Victorian Pathway Certificate) students went on an excursion to Moonlit Sanctuary along with 10 staff members.
The cohort have been working on Civics Numeracy - now you might wonder, how does this excursion link to that? Students first needed to choose an endangered animal to campaign for, before then collecting statistical data to present on their campaign poster before participating in two different types of voting (first pass the vote and preferential voting).
It was a great excursion that provided students with the opportunity to engage in a range of different activities and ask the keepers questions on their chosen endangered animals. All up, it was a knowledgeable experience for all the staff and the students involved.

Some reports from our students:
Grace McLeod – 11K VPC Student
I had a great time at the sanctuary, I got to see so many different animals, learned so much about them and why some of them are endangered like the Tasmanian devil and many more animals. My favorite part of going to moonlight was probably feeding some of the animals like baby kangaroos, wallabies and DUCKS, a lot of ducks, I even named some of the animals that I loved. I also got to pat a snake named Silky, she was a beautiful python. Unfortunately, I didn’t get time to see all the animals there, but I would gladly go back to moonlit sanctuary and see the animals again.
Bhavishya (Vishu) Dhull – 11K VPC Student
On Monday morning we went to the zoo with year 11 students. My favourite animal in the zoo is the kangaroo and dingo. I really enjoyed the experience as it was my first time seeing these animals. I learnt a lot about the different animals from the zookeepers and I found it very interesting. My most memorable moment was being able to see kangaroos and feeding them.
Anika Heystek – 11K
Some of my favorite experiences were feeding the kangaroos and the wallabies and being able to pet and come close to them.
I liked learning about their endangered species they were all very beautiful creatures and being able to see the reptiles they were all very interesting to learn about and being able to see them was an amazing experience.
I learnt what animals eat what endangered them and why their population is endangered. it is mostly because of humans ruining their habitat and the animals that eats them.
I learnt that most snakes are venomous and that you should not come near them and how they use their defence mechanisms, so they don’t get eaten or hurt.
I learnt there are 3 species of wombats and that they can run as fast a human and their teeth don’t stop growing. Animals live longer in captivity and that marsupial pouches face their rear and not the front.
Taniora Hannon – 11H
The Moonlit Sanctuary experience was an amazing endeavour to participate in, as it further enhanced my knowledge on the native animals of Australia. The most interesting animals that I had the privilege of encountering were the shingleback skink and the wallabies, which, at the time, were very interesting to see! Although I started the day tired and apprehensive, I was soon energised by the friendly staff, the exotic animals and the unique experiences offered. Overall, the experience was great and I had a fantastic time. I think I speak for the entire Year 11 cohort when I say - go Moonlit Sanctuary!
Olivia Bacchin – 11I
I really enjoyed going to the moonlit sanctuary. We got to feed and touch kangaroos, joeys and wallaby's as they were freely roaming. We got to understand how it all linked in with our maths unit and it was a new creative way to get is more involved in our maths subject. It was a great experience, and I would recommend going on this excursion.
Year 9 Japanese City Excursion
On Thursday 27th June Year 9 Japanese students attended an excursion to help them create real-world connections to the Japanese language and culture that they have been learning throughout Year 9. They attended an educational seminar at the Japanese Consulate General on the topic of school life in Japan, which aligns with the current curriculum unit on Japanese schooling; and then experienced Japanese cuisine through a visit to a Japanese restaurant. All students had a great time!
Some accounts of the day from our students:

On Thursday the 27th of June, we were immersed in Japanese culture at our city excursion. We received an entertaining presentation at the Japanese Consulate-General, which told us about school life in Japan and the unique aspects that aren't like school here. Afterwards, we went to Daiso where everyone bought really cute treasures and trinkets and matching items with their friends. Finally, we went to Dohtonbori's, where I got to make my own Okonomiyaki! It was a very fun day, and I think everyone really enjoyed it.

We learnt new things about life & school in Japan & got a lot of details out of the consulate general. The staff were very helpful & would not hesitate at all to answer our cohort’s questions. We then went to the Daiso department store which had many convenient items & delicious snacks. After this, we all went & tried Japanese cuisine at the Dohtonbori restaurant. This was a fascinating experience, as many of us had to learn how to cook food on the table. In summary, this day was exciting & enjoyable, & I give it a very well deserved & achieved 10 out of 10.
