LIBRARY NOTES
Holiday Reading
I have been encouraging students to borrow more books than they usually do (up to double) to get them through the holidays, so if you find more than the usual number of Library books at home, don’t panic.
We have discussed just how many books might be needed at home because of household plans. Maybe their holiday involves a plane trip or long car ride full of luggage and there may not be room for printed books. As an alternative to reading a book, they could take eBooks on an iPad or students could write or dictate a diary of their travels to an older sibling or adult, as their holiday adventures unfold, and then read it. Any incidental reading is great reading. Reading fitness is just like physical fitness. “Use it or lose it!”
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
Many students are involved in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, which will finish at the beginning of September, so make sure you update your dashboard, and I will verify those books.
Children’s Book Council of Australia. Book Week 2024
Next term we will celebrate CBCA Book Week a week later than a lot of schools, as we have Italian Day and some excursions to interrupt celebrations. Book Week at Wales Street will begin in Week 7 on Monday 26th August. The theme is “Reading is magic!”
Yes, we will have a Book character dress-up parade and we always value those costumes that are created from things you have at home! As much as students want a competition, there will be no prizes for best costume. We want to enjoy talking about our book characters.
Library classes in Book Week will include a craft activity celebrating a favourite book and the announcement of the winner of the WSPS vote for their favourite Picture story book.
Happy Holiday Reading!
