On Tuesday June 11th Lennox was given permission to fall asleep during our class incursion. This was a dream come true for a student!

Year 12 Psychology students are exploring sleep, including different ways to measure sleep. In the image below, Lennox was connected to a range of devices that measured his electrical brain activity, heart rate, muscle movements and eye muscle movements to create a graphical representation. When Lennox fell asleep a range of these physiological functions change and the class were able to observe this data in real time and draw conclusions about which of sleep he was in.

The program was run by Monash Universities’ Turner Institute. It has been developed in alignment with the current VCE curriculum

During the session, the workshop covered:

  • The purpose of sleep
  • Normal sleep patterns
  • Identification of sleep stages and how these are interpreted using EEG, EOG and EMG
  • The effects of sleep deprivation and recovery sleep
  • Adolescent sleep patterns.

Students have enjoyed about learning about sleep in Psychology and trying to make practical changes to improve their sleep hygiene.
