Year 5 & 6

Around our level

On Thursday 13th June, our Year 5 students had a fabulous day at Melba College, getting a sneak peek into the life of a Year 7 student. From the moment they stepped onto the college grounds, the excitement was clearly visible.

The day began in the college theatre listening to a speech from a Year 7 teacher and past Yarra Road students. Afterwards, they were split into two groups to commence their classes of Food Tech, Japanese, Science and PE. It was intriguing watching our students discover new interests, talents and essential skills to help them thrive in their future secondary school journey.

Overall, this experience will help with easing the transition into secondary education and build their understanding of the structure, expectations, and opportunities that await them.

Whilst the Year Fives were at Melba College, the Year 6 students participated in a day called ‘The Amazing Race’. They were in teams of 6 students. The first activity was a scavenger hunt with a twist. The students were not given a piece of paper with the itemson it, instead they had to listen and remember the items they had to find. This involved the team working together and helping each other. The team also had to perform a trick.

After the scavenger hunt, each person had to throw a beanbag into a hoop as many times as possible within the time limit, knock down skittles by rolling a ball and shooting goals into the basketball hoops. The teams also had to link arms and carry two balloons across the basketball courts and then keep the balloons in the air, not letting them touch the ground.

The teams played against each other in dodgeball and the final activity was a craft activity. Each team had thirty minutes to make something using the materials that they were given. The photo doesn’t do justice to the things they made - sushi rolls, pictures, friendship bracelets, fortune cookies and a basket filled with paper goodies. It was fabulous to see every student work as a team and support each other. It was a day full of laughs.

Make a cuppa and enjoy reading over some student recounts of their special day!

During Food Tech we made Chocolate Truffles. They were so yummy! I told my mum about them.

We had a lesson in Science and did the experiment ‘Milk in Motion.’ It was great to see how the colours mixed together, it looked quite good! Then it got messy.

During the Amazing race I think the team work was amazing because people were helping each other out which was nice. Overall it was a great day!

To start off the day we went on a bus to Melba College. At Melba, we had a Japanese class, a Science class, Food Tech and PE. We split into 2 groups and I was with my friends. First, I had Japanese and we watched two videos. After the videos, the teacher showed us her daughter's bag and it was super heavy! Then, we had Science and we experimented with milk, food dye and washing detergent, and we also made sherbert. It was really fun! After lunch, we had Food Tech and made chocolate truffles. They were super yummy! We also had to wash the dishes when we finished… BORING! Lastly, we had Sport where we played Rabbits and Rats and Mat Ball. They were both really fun. After all of that, we went back on the bus back to school.

Spending a day at Melba College was great! I loved Food Tech but we didn't get to do much because most of it was already prepared. PE was so much fun! I haven't played Corn Hole in a while. Mat ball was also a lot of fun except that the teams were uneven. For Science, we did a milk experiment which I had done in the past, but it was still heaps of fun. We also made sherbet, which I had done before but I still loved it. Even though some people really enjoyed Japanese, I found it a bit boring because I don't really enjoy languages much. Although, I did like the videos. Altogether, it was a really fun day!

In the Amazing Race at the start of the day, we got into assigned groups. We did a scavenger hunt and played a few games like ten-pin bowling or throwing bean bags. After Snack, we did some dodgeball. We were given balloons and had to do activities like keeping it from touching the floor. Then we did a kind of arts and craft activity where we were given certain materials like paper and letters that we collected while doing other activities. The letters spelt out teamwork and we ended up making a 2D picture using all the materials.

When we got to school the Year Fives got their lanyards and went on the  bus. The Year Sixes went to Miss Haysoms room and we talked about what we were going to do. Then she put us in groups and we did a scavenger hunt. We also had to make a trick after the scavenger hunt. We did some bean bag and bowling games afterwards and then it was snack time. After snack, we played a game of dodgeball and then we did a basketball shooting game. We also did a balloon challenge and then we had lunch. After lunch, we had free time. Later in the day, the Year Fives came back and then it was home time.

I am a fifth grader so I went to Melba College. First, we did Sport and played Map Ball. Then it was Japanese. We learned about Japanese schools and their lunches. After that was a break, we ate our snack and played. The activity after that was Science, we experimented with milk and even made a sherbet. The final activity was Food Tech and we got to make chocolate truffles. They were delicious. It was a great day.

When I was at Melba, I was like, maybe I want to go here? The experience in sport was amazing. I learnt a new game mapball. And don't even get me started on food tech! We made chocolate truffles. In science we looked at how the dish soap chased away the colour that we put in the milk. And I learnt stuff I didn't know in Japan, about how it's one of the safest countries in the world.

I did the Amazing Race. We were put in groups of six and you would have at least one close friend but the point of the groups was so you could learn about teamwork. The activities we did were a scavenger hunt, bowling, dodgeball, some balloon activities and the last one, we were given some materials to make something. Overall it was really fun and I think everyone learned a lot.

All the other Year 6s participated in  the Amazing Race while the Year 5s were at Melba. In the Amazing Race we did lots of different activities such as a scavenger hunt, bowling, crafts, dodgeball, basketball shootouts  and some other things. I loved the Amazing Race. It was heaps of fun because everyone was included in everything. I really hope we get to do it again.
