Year 3 & 4

Around our level

Our Year 3/4 students have been diving into the exciting world of fractions!

We’ve been focusing on three different ways to understand fractions: the area model (looking at parts of shapes), the linear model (using lengths on number lines), and the set model (using sets of objects, such as ⅓ of the batch of cookies).

To make learning about fractions hands-on, we’ve been using lots of practical activities. One of the favourites has been our flag design challenge. Each student had to design a flag using four different colours, ensuring that each colour covered exactly one quarter of the flag's area. This activity helped them to apply their knowledge creatively.

By using different models, like cutting shapes into pieces or drawing lines on a number scale, the children are getting a solid grasp of fractions in everyday contexts. These activities encourage them to think flexibly and see fractions in different ways.

We are delighted to see how enthusiastically the students have embraced learning about fractions.

Here is what they had to say about their learning:

Thomas: We made fractions by folding paper as much as we could and it was fun doing that.

Toby M: I find dividing a whole into small pieces difficult when I am working out fractions.

Arthur S: I enjoyed solving the fraction questions using the number line.

Eddie: I liked the flag activity. We had to split the flag into four equal pieces. We had to use four colours to show quarters.

Sadie: I liked fractions because Mrs. Macrae finds fun activities to do based on fractions.

Bella B: I liked doing the flags because it was fun. Sometimes with fractions you can do colouring. When I first started learning it, it was tricky but then Taylor helped me, and now I get it.

Will: Learning fractions is good because I like that we mostly work it out in our heads and we get to cut up stuff.

Harry C: Working with partners on the flag activity was fun because you can be creative about the flags.

Matthew: You can learn different ways to make fractions. It was fun and you can try to make quarters.

Celebrating our Students

Students are nominated by their teachers to receive a certificate of acknowledgment. The below student's certificates will be presented at our next assembly.
