Year 2-3 Swimming Carnival
Mulhall has done it again!
The Green Machine made it a sweep of the junior school swimming carnivals with a narrow win at the Year 2-3 event.
Only a handful of points separated the four houses in a tightly fought battle:
1st Mulhall 177 points
2nd Barry 169
3rd Ward 162
4th McGrath 160
The Spirit Cup went to Ward, whose enthusiastic cheering echoed relentlessly around the Norwood Indoor Pool’s confines.
Our carnival grew from 23 to 34 events this year. It is fantastic to see so many students willing to jump in the pool and have a go to help their House. Our young swimmers flew up and down the pool with a couple of photo-finishes testing the place marshalls.
There was just as much action in the grandstand with House colours on full display; banners, mascots, zinc (indoors?) and funky costumes.
The tyre tow relays were a highlight. The rules may not have been strictly followed but by that stage everyone was just excited to jump in the pool one more time. One student suggested that the teachers should enter a team in the tyre tow relay next year... it may be tough to get that one through!
Many thanks to Ms Edwards for organising and MC’ing the event. Our Year 6 student leaders did a brilliant job as place marshalls and also jumped in the pool to accompany the less confident swimmers during their races. Our teachers worked tirelessly, marshalling students at the start line and tallying points at the finish.
We had a number of parents and grandparents fill the swim centre and cheer the girls on – which made for a brilliant atmosphere!
Student Achievement
Well done to Quinn Kidd who competed in the Easter Classic basketball tournament on the Easter long weekend. Quinn filled in for a visiting Victorian team called Board Sports. Her team consisted of girls from Warrnambool, Mildura, Wangaratta and Adelaide. The team had never played together before meeting 20 minutes before they played Friday. The girls went through undefeated taking out the grand final!
Quinn also finished the school term for Loreto as the second leading point scorer in Basketball SA’s Year 5/6 competition at Wayville.
Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival
A team of Loreto swimmers acquitted themselves brilliantly against some strong opposition at the Catholic Primary Schools Swimming Carnival at Burnside Pool last week. Finishing in 4th place against some of these ‘coastal’ schools whose students live in the water is no mean feat!
It was great to see our girls support each other during the day and share in each other’s success. Thank you to all the parents who came along to cheer the girls on, particularly to Nadia and Susannah who assisted with place judging.
Thank you also to Ms Edwards who made sure that all of our swimmers made it to the start for their races!

Little Athletics
Our program is up and running on Thursday afternoons with an enthusiastic group of Year 3-6 students taking part. Week 1 saw us rotate through sprints, high jump and discus while last night we tried long distance, long jump and shot put.
We have one more session for the term before continuing in Term 2. The autumn program culminates with the LORETOlympics on Thursday May 23.
