Year 10

Harry Perkins Excursion

The Year 10 Pre-ATAR class attended the Harry Perkins Research Institute in Nedlands.

Students worked with scientists and university graduate specialists. In the purpose-built teaching laboratory, students used research-grade equipment and the latest technology to consolidate learning in a practical, hands-on way. Guided by the Perkins researchers, students learnt about how CRISPR and bioinformatics is applied. Students used tools to develop improved treatments and diagnostic tests for medical conditions. Students learnt how to use technical tools like the micro-pipette and mini-centrifuge to extract DNA from cells. The unique experiences allowed students to apply their knowledge and observe and apply STEM in a possible career pathway. Students really enjoyed the day.

Start of Term

The start of Term Two presents families with students’ transition from summer to winter uniforms. Of course, Mother Nature does not consider this change when we are gifted beautiful warmer weather; it is important that we exercise flexibility at this time. Whilst there are uniform transition teething issues, all matters must be resolved before the College’s April 30 Photo Day. Thank you to all families for your support during this transition.

On Tuesday, Mrs Thomas’ Year 10 Science class went to the Harry Perkins Institute. Many students were eager to wear their newly acquired blazers and they certainly were dressed to represent the College with aplomb.

Term Two Events

With several important events on the near horizon, this will be a busy Term for Year 10 students. I suggest that all Year 10 families take note of the following Term Two dates which specifically pertain to Year 10 students:

  • Monday May 20: Year 10 Outdoor Education excursion to Omeo Wreck
  • Wednesday May 22: Sports Coaching Wildcats incursion
  • Wednesday May 29 – Wednesday May 5: Year 10 Examinations. Please note that students will only be required to be at the College for their examinations on these days.
  • Thursday June 6 – Friday June 7: Year 10 Retreat
  • Week Commencing Monday June 10: Year 10 OLNA (Online Literacy & Numeracy Assessments)
  • Friday June 21: Careers Expo
  • Monday June 24: Road Safety incursion
  • Friday June 28: Combined Universities Visit
  • Friday June 28: Wellbeing activities

No doubt, students will approach these events with a myriad of emotions. In some cases, parents may be concerned about the various emotions that their child may be experiencing. If this is the case, it is vital that parents and guardians utilise a proactive approach when communicating with the College. Furthermore, I remind parents and guardians that the College has provisioned access to ParentTV, a platform which provides them with invaluable support.

Extra Learning Support Opportunities

No doubt, students and their families will be reflecting on recently published Progress Reports and focusing their minds towards upcoming examinations. Teachers should always be students’ first port of call to assist with learning questions. Students are challenged to proactively take advantage of the following opportunities that aim to support their learning:

  • Homework Club commences on Monday April 22. For Secondary students, it will conclude at 4:15pm. Sessions will occur in the Kaadadjiny Hub. Further information will be sent to families this week.
  • Mrs Reed is offering Writing tutoring to Year 10 students who need to achieve this outcome. Sessions are being delivered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Correspondence pertaining to this support was sent this week.
  • Any students who need to attain any OLNA outcome have been provided with access to OLNA Online Support. It would be wise for students to access this very helpful platform during their personal study time.
  • Students can enrich their knowledge by accessing their Atomi, Mathletics, JacPlus and Clickview accounts.
