IB or VCE

Do you know what pathway to choose?

IB

VCE

Completing 3 standard and 3 high-level subjects

In the IB, you are required to complete at least 3 subjects at a higher level and the rest at a standard level. Completing at a higher level means to explore the topic in greater depth and learn more content than otherwise would have been learned.

Variety of subjects

At Ivanhoe, there are more subjects offered in VCE than IB. English is the only compulsory VCE subject at Ivanhoe.

CAS

The CAS portfolio is composed of both the CAS project and portfolio. The portfolio involves reflecting on a minimum of 12 Co-curricular activities that can be categorised as creativity, activity or service.

Complete choice over subjects

Within the IB, you must do one subject within each of the 6 groups, in VCE however, you can do whatever subjects you choose.

Period 0

In the IB, you will have a period 0 (3 classes per cycle) for your 3 HL subjects which runs from 8:00-8:35am to complete all content with an adequate revision period at the end of Year 12.

SACS contribute to your ATAR

The SACS that you complete during the Unit 3 and 4 of your subjects will contribute to your overall ATAR

Self directed system

The IB program is designed to prepare you for university style learning where you have to take responsibility of your own learning. An IB learner must be self motivated and be able to ask for help when needed.

Complete Unit 3 and 4 subjects early

If you choose to complete a Unit 1 and 2 subject in Year 10 and continue to the Unit 3 and 4 in Year 11, you will have a total of 6 subjects at the end of Year 12 contributing to your ATAR instead of only 5. However you will still complete 5 in your Year 12 Year, which has the benefit of relieving pressure on your performance.

Not all assessments throughout the year  contribute to your ATAR

The IB is all about completing work to help better your understanding of the content to prepare for your exams at the end of Year 12. Your ATAR at the end of year is comprised of end of year exams and internal assessments.

VCE ATAR can be used for applications to university internationally

Not a ranked system

Unlike VCE, the IB is not a ranked system so you are not competing with your classmates.

VCE is a ranked system

Receiving an 80 ATAR places you in the top 20% of the state.

Widely Recognised Internationally

As the program is International, it is recognised as an incredible program. Completing the IB can look exemplary of resumes and when applying to university.

TOK

Theory of knowledge classes are compulsory as part of the IB core and occur twice a week. TOK is essentially a philosophy class where you discuss and respond to thought provoking topics and contributes 1 mark to your overall IB mark of 45.

Extended Essay

Over the summer holidays between Year 11 and 12, students write a 4000 word research essay on a topic of their choosing, with the guidance of their supervisor.
