Boys Hockey, Jacob Dubrow, Year 11, Ridgeway Campus
The Firsts’ Boys Hockey Team started the season strong with a great pre-season where players from our squad were all dedicated and enthusiastic to show their new skills to be selected for the opening match of the season. When the time came, the team had the first game hosting the strong hockey side of Camberwell Grammar. Many young debutants where selected and ready to show their talent. A great young player named Harvey from Year 8, played an excellent debut match, showing promising future for the team in years to come. Unfortunately, Camberwell got away with a strong lead, scoring 7 goals against us, however, a terrific tomahawk hit from Co-Captain Hamish Noonan found my stick creating a beautiful deflection goal making the final scores a 7-1 Loss.
Round 2 had us play Yarra Valley Grammar School where we won a small yet strong win with the final scores being 2-1. The following week we hosted hockey powerhouse against Trinity Grammar on a wet Friday afternoon. The team started off very strong with no goals from either sides as well as a very solid defensive quarter. In the second half, due to a terrific tackle by Jack Morgan in Trinty’s defence, he passed the ball to me, giving me a chance to score a fantastic goal in between the keepers’ legs. Despite this opening goal, Trinity scored the next 7 making it a 7-1 Loss.
The following week the team had a bye, allowing us to practice key drills for the upcoming games. In round 5 we played Marcelin. A few players like Jack from Year 8 had the opportunity to play their first games and showcase their skills. The team started extremely strong scoring the first goal in the first minute of the game, and after that, goals wouldn’t stop coming. The team ended off the day with a fantastic 17-0 win with an amazing goal from Riley in Year 9 with a mid-air hit! The team now stands in a strong position to make finals where we will need to beat Mentone to lock in our spot.
