Library News

Shane McCarthy visit

On Wednesday we excitedly welcomed graphic author Shane McCarthy to our library. Shane is a Perth-based author whose work has been published by Marvel, DC Comics and more. Over many years Shane has written well known comics such as Batman, Deadpool and X-Men. During his run on the Transformers comics he also created “Drift”, the popular transformer that went on to be featured in two major motion pictures.

Shane worked with the Year Seven cohort, who are currently working on their own graphic story in English. Shane’s presentation on Wednesday, titled “How to write a graphic novel” was an engaging, interactive talk on the processes of his writing, how a comic is made, and the important tricks that students need to be aware of in the creative process of producing a graphic story.

I am looking forward to seeing the work produced by the Year Seven cohort. Students are keen to display in the library.

The Year Six cohort also had the pleasure of hearing Shane’s presentation. We were able to hear about and see the beginnings of a graphic novel Shane is working on and looking forward to adding this to our library collection.

Shane spent some time one-on-one with interested students. His engaging personality was very warmly received. The insight he gave us into the world of creating comics and graphic novels was so valuable.

We look forward to working with Shane again in the future.

Annual Foodbank Drive

Students and families of Great Southern Grammar have been amazing and donated a huge amount to the annual Foodbank drive. Staff from Foodbank Albany informed us that our donations would provide more than 100 meals for families doing it tough which was fantastic to hear.

We would like to thank everyone for their donations and let you know that if you want to help before next year’s GSG Foodbank drive, feel free to donate directly at Foodbank in Albany.

Well done GSG!
