Mokare Day

Mokare Day theme, "Icons of the World" was a fun day with so many students getting involved with the theme. $850 was raised. All funds raised during Mokare Day will be donated to the RUAH Foundation, a respected non-profit organisation based in Western Australia. The RUAH Foundation provides vital services, including family support, mental health care, housing, homelessness assistance, and legal support to those in need.

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone for getting involved in Mokare Day. Some of the costumes were definitely iconic to say the least and it was lovely to see friends coming together to dress up as a group in many instances. You are all to be commended for embracing the spirit of the day and having fun, yet staying appropriate.

Thank you to all the students who baked for the stall! So much delicious food.

Thanks to all teachers and Year Twelve students for the epic game of netball. The teachers were victorious 15-6. Thanks to Tiff and Katie for umpiring. A few teachers are going home to ice up.

Year Ten Work Experience

Year Ten work experience begins next week, marking an exciting opportunity for students to step into the real world of work. This experience offers invaluable insight into the daily responsibilities and commitment required in various professions. It's a chance for students to apply their skills in a practical setting, learn from industry professionals, and gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed in a working environment. Albany’s BIG Sleep Out

Next Thursday 22 August, the Year Eleven Certificate IV in Business class will be hosting a school-based fundraiser to support the 2024 Community Bank Albany’s BIG Sleep Out. This initiative aims to raise funds for those experiencing homelessness in our community, and your support is crucial.

There are two ways to contribute:

Lunchtime: Bring as many gold coins as possible to spend on items such as treats from the cake stall, drinks, and games.
All Day: Wear a sleepout item with your uniform, such as a dressing gown, slippers, or an Oodie. Donations will be collected in Homeroom.

VACS update

Sports for Years Seven to Nine

It has been truly inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and energy of our Years Seven to Nine students as they actively participate in the diverse range of sports offered during VACS. These sessions provide a unique opportunity for students not only to engage in physical activity but also to connect with their peers from different houses. Through these interactions, they are able to build meaningful relationships, learn the importance of teamwork, and experience first hand the power of connecting with others. These experiences lay the foundation for a strong sense of community and camaraderie that will benefit them throughout their school journey and beyond.

Art and Culture for Years Ten to Twelve

The House Fishing Competition has been a fantastic event, filled with excitement and friendly competition. Last week's session was especially memorable, with students showing great enthusiasm and teamwork.

Mr Donaldson has put together an update to recap the highlights and share some of the standout moments from the competition.

This was the week our courageous fisho's had been waiting for. Hungry fish aplenty and with the aggressive mojo to match, this week was our 'Biggest Bream' competition.

A location change suggested by our two pre-competition favourites’ O'Shea and Pete proved fruitful for both gentlemen early, reeling in a 22cm and 23cm bream respectively while putting Baudin and Wilson on the board. It was an intimidating start by the two boys.

There is an age old saying in fishing: 'no risk, no reward' (within reason people, your personal safety is always #1 and no fish is worth your life) that Lucy and Tyla took on board, fishing some very 'snaggy' and less fished areas. This didn't pay off, with both girls getting caught up and requiring some retying of rigs early on in the session. Some may have buckled under this adversity, not these two. With steely resolve they tried a slightly different angle of attack which produced a whopping 24.5cm bream for Lucy and the lead for Camfield. Her cries of jubilation can still be heard echoing throughout the river.

While George and Harrison fished for baby bream on one rock (it was a biggest fish competition gents), a small shower caused the majority of the group to retreat to cover.

Mokare's Kate, Mia and Riley remained, desperate to get Mokare on the board in what was otherwise a disappointing day for the House. ''Lessons in life are best learned lived'' and unfortunately, despite claims from Mia that there was one fish landed, the lead adjudicator did not see the fish, so it was not counted towards the tally. A lesson these three will surely not forget. A final flurry of concentrated and chaotic effort from the three Mokareans in the fleeting minutes led to nought and unfortunately Mokare were left with no fish on the board.

Years Seven to Nine Social

Student Council Leaders are hosting the 2024 social for students in Years Seven, Eight, and Nine on Wednesday 21 August, between 6.00pm and 8.00pm.

The event will be held at the GSG Hall and is sure to be full of dancing, music, and fun. The social will be an Aussie-themed dress-up, so come along in your best ‘Aussie’ outfit.

Included in your entry will be some sweet and savoury snacks to keep up the energy levels. Just bring along a water bottle to keep you hydrated throughout the event.

Rio Tinto Indigenous Cadetships and Scholarships

The Rio Tinto Indigenous Cadetship Programme supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to complete their undergraduate degree, and gain professional work experience within the organisation.

Rio Tinto provides a study allowance, and twelve weeks of paid vacation work to students on the programme.

To be eligible for the program you must:

Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
Provide evidence of your Indigenous identity by means of recognition with a ‘common seal’ from the relevant Indigenous group
Be enrolled for full-time study at an Australian university
Be enrolled in your first undergraduate degree
Not have completed a cadetship previously
Meet Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements as the Indigenous cadetship programme is taxed accordingly.

You must also be enrolled into one of the following disciplines:

Science
Business
Environment
