Learning and Curriculum Primary - Stage 3
Stage 3 History
Year 5
The History unit this term, “Gold Fever” provides students with the opportunity to learn about the impact of the gold rushes, the Eureka Stockade, internal exploration, migration, the advent of rail and the telegraph system on the Australian colonies. They explore the reasons for migration to Australia from Europe and Asia and contributions of migrant groups within the colony. The students also investigate the roles of significant individuals or groups in the shaping of our nation; migrant miners (both European and Chinese), entrepreneurs, artists, writers, political leaders, and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Year 6
In Term 1, students acquired knowledge and understanding of the development of Australia as a nation, particularly after 1901. Students explored the factors that led to Federation and experiences of democracy and citizenship over time, including the significance of Australia’s British heritage, the Westminster system and other models that influenced the development of Australia’s system of government.
Term 3 sees students examining and exploring the struggles for rights and freedoms, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students learn about the way of life of people who migrated to Australia and their contributions to Australia’s economic and social development. Students apply a variety of skills of historical inquiry and communication in their learning.
