With Sue Hone

WOW here we are at the end of week 6 and I am finding the “struggle” real at the moment. Term 3 is notoriously busy BUT the holidays are now in sight however we still have lots to happen in the wellbeing space over the next few weeks and it is that motivation that will keep giving me the incentive to move forward to achieve our goals. I am remembering, and more importantly practicing the golden rule of including some self-care along the way, to keep everything in perspective and more importantly in balance.

The arrival of spring and the wonder of nature emerging from its winter slumber is a big part of my selfcare (along with chocolate and a good coffee) so I am taking a few minutes to sit and enjoy the space both here at MCC and also out of work. Here on the school grounds currently we have a new rose garden being planted just outside the staff room near our ADF reflection area but I can’t help thinking is there a subliminal message for our wonderful staff to also take the time to stop and smell the roses ….Yes, I am forever the optimist.

“Wellness Wednesday” will be drawing to a close next week. During the last few weeks year groups have submitted some great affirmations and quotes to inspire all to have a conversation about wellbeing. Since our last newsletter Year 9 have encouraged us with “You can’t stop waves but you can learn to surf” and this week we shared the wise word from Albert Einstein “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” This was his life advice written in a letter to his son Eduard 5 February 1930. Relevant then and still appropriate nearly 100 years later.

The wellbeing committee would like to thank all students who submitted contributions to this activity and especially thank pastoral leaders and homeroom teachers for supporting the activity and having wellbeing conversations.

The activity will conclude next week and as a token of appreciation and gratitude the wellbeing committee will be hosting an afternoon tea for all staff at MCC to remind each person of their important contribution to our MCC community and to brighten their day.

Finally, on Thursday 12th September MCC will acknowledge and celebrate RU OK DAY? here at MCC. There are a range of activities for individual year groups that can be completed in class and additional activities that can be enjoyed by all during the lunch break.

Year 11 will participate in a workshop with clinicians from headspace Griffith which follows on from a recent wellbeing session with our own school counsellor Karen Surian. This is timely, as they will be commencing their year 11 preliminary exams the following week so they will be well equipped with strategies and access to supports during what can be a stressful period.

During lunch time the Wellbeing Committee will be hosting a cake/ bake stall with an array of treats for sale with proceeds going directly to headspace Griffith. In addition, they will have the hall open for students (and staff) to have some fun and see if they can match the choreography with “Just Dance Playlist” on the overhead screen.

The committee will also be launching their final activity on this day which is a major school event to be held in week 3, term 4. The committee are very exciting and with thanks to headspace Griffith and PHN can not wait to share the details on the day. More details will be included in the next edition of the newsletter.
