2024 AUSTRALIAN MATHS COMPETITION

Marian Catholic College participated in this year’s Australian Mathematics Competition.

It was held last August 8 where 92 students from Years 7-10 have to answer 30 questions, 25 of which was a multiple-choice question and 5 questions that required number answers. Students sat on the exam for 75 minutes and were not allowed to use a calculator.

This competition is one of the largest educational mathematics competitions in Australia. It is an engaging problem solving that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students’ everyday lives.

The Competition started in Australia in 1978, was the original, and is now one of the largest of its kind in the world. It is designed to attract students to the joy of maths by demonstrating its place in everyday life and making it fun. More than 40 countries participate in the AMC each year and is recognised as an international benchmark for mathematics performance.

This competition excited and inspired students’ interest in mathematical problem solving and I look forward to sharing the students’ pride in their achievements on the competition.

2024 MATHS CHALLENGE RESULTS

Maths Challenge is a problem solving program for teachers to deliver to students in Years 7 to 10. It aims to foster students’ understanding of the power of mathematics and the joy of mathematical problem solving. It also provides teachers with engaging and accessible materials to support and develop their maths teaching practice, and can help them identify and support talented students.

The Maths Challenge ran over 3 – 4 weeks last Term 2, with around 1 hour of class time and around 2-3 hours of study time per week. Students were encouraged to work collaboratively together in groups of three for primary divisions, and groups of two for secondary divisions.

Like all our competitions and programs, Maths Challenge contains unique problems designed each year by leading educators and academics to challenge and extend your students’ problem-solving skills.
