Learning and Teaching

Term 3 2024

Wow what a week again at St Louis.

Our Olympics celebration on Tuesday was fantastic and there were many smiling faces. Scotland was the winning team and they all received a gold medal. Kaboom commented about the positive level of bahaviour and respect that all students showed on the day. Go St Louis!

On Thursday the 8th of  August a team of our talented year 5 Mathematics students went to St Patrick's Primary School in Mentone to participate in a Mathematics Games Day run by the Mathematical Association of Victoria.

The eight students selected were wonderful ambassadors for our school and worked as a team to solve many of the challenging problems and played games against other teams of students.

Three of the Year 5's provided insightful comments about the day are shared below.

Yesterday we went to St Patrick's and played some fun Maths games and we got to see a lot of our friends from other schools. I played footy outside with some of my mates. My favourite part was the Maths Trail.

Yesterday we went to St Patrick's to compete in the Maths' Games. We did activity booklets, a Maths Trail and Maths games at the end. It was really fun and we even saw some familiar faces. My favourite part was the games at the end. On the way home there was something happening in Cheltenham which stopped the trains and we couldn't get back to school.

On Thursday we went to St Patrick's to play some Maths games. We were competing against many schools from Victoria. The questions were pretty hard but we had a go. At the end we played fun Maths Games against other teams. When we went to the station the trains were delayed and our parents had to come and pick us up. It was an interesting day.

Next week National Science Week begins. The school theme for National Science Week in 2024 is Species Survival - More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.

Our students will continue to investigate and learn about an amazing variety of topics including species survival, artificial intelligence and problems in our environment that threaten species. Many of our classes are also continuing to go on different excursions and incursions exploring  animals and their habitats.

This term the strand of Chemical Science will also be explored.  Key learning that will be introduced, developed and explored include :

  •  changes in state of  various materials including the use of heat, reversible and irreversible changes
  • properties of familiar objects, natural and processed materials
  • solids, liquids and gases and the different ways each of them behave and can be classified

On Thursday we will be celebrating Italian Day. Our students are encouraged to dress in the colours of the Italian flag or a famous Italian character. We will commence the day with the Feast of the Assumption Mass, followed by our Italian performance of Vacanze Romane and buddy activities in the afternoon. It should be a great day with our pizza slices at the first break.

We look forward to continuing to share their learning journey with you.
