Each year the CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) presents annual awards to books that have been written and illustrated by Australian authors and illustrators. The award also acknowledges their outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature.
The CBCA was founded in 1945 at a time when Australian children’s books were few, and Australian authors and illustrators were virtually unknown. The following year, 1946, The Book of the Year Awards, an annual award to promote books of high literary and artistic quality was established. These awards are now the most influential and highly respected in Australia.
There are 6 categories in total that are recognised and awarded. Here at St Joseph’s, we usually focus on 2 of the categories: Book of the Year: Early Childhood & Picture Book of the Year. Each category has 6 titles.
The winning books in these titles this year are: Book of the Year: Early Childhood: Gymnastica Fantastica & Picture Picture Book of the Year: Timeless.
