News from the Grade 1's

In Term 1, the Year One students focused on Jane Godwin for their Author's Study.

Each week we learned about one of Jane Godwin's books.

We also learned a lot about the illustrators Anna Walker and Alison Lester, whom she often works with.

At the end of the term, the Year Ones created a collage of Frankston foreshore and Oliver's Hill, inspired by the artwork in Jane Godwin's book, 'The Silver Sea'.

Each student drew a picture which featured on the collage.

At the end of week one this term, Mrs Jeffreys' went to Sorrento after school to attend a workshop at the 'Sorrento Writer's Festival', which Jane Godwin was presenting.

Mrs Jeffreys gave the Year One's collage to Jane Godwin, who loved it!

Jane Godwin also showed it to Alison Lester, who is also pictured in the photo.

The Year Ones were very excited to receive an email from Jane Godwin, thanking them for their beautiful artwork, which is going to hang in her office.

Literacy News

This term we will be including Fluency Passages in our home learning. The passages will reflect what has been explicitly taught in the classroom the week before.

When students read at home, the focus shifts to fluency, helping them work toward mastery of the text.

Fluency is not just about reading quickly—it involves phrasing, expression, and intonation. As your child progresses, texts will become increasingly complex, and fluency will play a key role in comprehension.

Remember, everything we do at any stage lays the foundation for future reading success.

Reading comprehension is an outcome NOT a skill. Reading comprehension is not a single thing that can be measured or taught. It depends on word recognition, fluency and vocabulary understanding.

District Field Aths Day

The District Athletics Field Day was held on Wednesday 30th of April at Ballam Park Athletics Track, bringing together students from various schools across the district to compete in a day of spirited athletic competition.

The event featured a wide range of field events including long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put, and discus.

Participants showcased outstanding sportsmanship, determination, and teamwork throughout the day.

Several personal bests were achieved, and many students impressed with their athletic talent and dedication.

The crowd, consisting of parents, teachers, and fellow students cheered enthusiastically, creating a lively and supportive atmosphere.

Special thanks go to all staff and students whose hard work, enthusiasm, and positive spirit made the day such a great success. Their efforts ensured that the event ran smoothly and was enjoyable for everyone involved.

Grade 5/6 camp

In Week 9 of term1, the Grade 5s and 6s headed to Camp Rumbug for an action packed 4 day stay.

The days were long, the meals were delicious, and the adrenalin raising activities ensured everyone slept well each night.

Screams of terror echoed across the valleys as students zip-lined over lakes, built rafts (of questionable integrity), and tested their fears - and the trust of their carabiners - as they took a 10 metre Leap of Faith.

Huts were built, as was teamwork, and students found themselves covered from head-to-toe in mud, with the widest of smiles on their faces.

Kids grow up a lot on camp.

Seeing these young students embrace challenge, take steps towards maturity and develop a greater sense of identity was incredibly heartwarming.

We are so proud of the young people they are becoming, and grateful for the chance to take them well outside of their comfort zones with the team at Camp Rumbug.
