ACC A Division Swimming:
On Wednesday, 26 March, the Mazenod College swimming team took to the water at the ACC A Division Swimming Carnival at HBF Stadium, showcasing impressive skill, determination and teamwork. The boys fought hard throughout the day, finishing in a commendable 8th place overall, a remarkable achievement considering the high level of competition.
The team’s performance was a testament to their hard work and preparation. Under the guidance of Mr Mallon and Joshua Pendal (Class of '19), the boys were well-prepared for the challenges of competing in their events. Their leadership and dedication ensured that the swimmers were ready to give their best.
A special mention goes to Team Captain Bailey, whose leadership played a crucial role in motivating the swimmers and helping to maintain focus throughout the day. Bailey’s efforts both in and out of the pool were invaluable in driving the team forward.
While the competition was fierce, the team’s spirit and effort shone brightly, and they displayed the resilience that Mazenod College is known for. We look forward to building on this year's results and aiming for an even better performance in next year’s carnival.
A huge thank you to Mr Mallon and Joshua for coaching, and all the swimmers for their dedication. We are incredibly proud of the team and their efforts and are excited for what lies ahead.
Here’s to even greater success next year!
Go Mazenod!
Graeme Wood Shield:
Round 3, Thursday 20 March
Mazenod College v SEDA College
Mazenod GWS cricket team travelled down to Wembley to take on SEDA College in their round 3 match of the GWS Cricket 20/20 tournament.
Mazenod won the toss and elected to bat.
Opening batsmen Mitchell P (12) and Captain Nate T (12) got the team off to a flyer, with a 51-run partnership off 5 overs, before the first wicket fell. There were some other handy other contributions with the bat, but SEDA got on a roll taking wickets and had Mazenod all out for 103 runs off 18.1 overs. Captain Nate T (12) was the top run scorer with 29 runs including 2 big sixes, with Mitchell P (12) being the other main contributor, scoring 25 runs. Micah A (12) 15 runs and Mitchell G (11) 11 runs also made notable contributions, which helped Mazenod achieve a defendable target.
The boys knew that they were a massive chance to win, if we bowled to our best. Mazenod took early wickets, and from there on, not many of SEDA’s batsmen could get going, with Mazenod having SEDA all out for 56 runs.
Pick of the Mazenod bowlers was Riley (Golden Arm) (12) with 3 wickets for 11 runs off 4 overs. Notable efforts came from Vicario G (12) with 2 wickets 14 runs off 4 overs and Captain Nate T (12) 2 wickets for 4 runs off his 2 overs.
A sensational, run defending win, which set us up for an exciting finals game!
Well done to the lads!
Graeme Wood Shield 20/20 Cricket Semi Final:
After a successful round robin campaign, the Mazenod 1st XI took on an in form Chisholm College in the semi-final on Wednesday March 26 at Houghton Park in Bayswater.
In stifling conditions, the Mazenod boys were more than happy to be sent in to bat first, after Chisholm won the toss and elected to bowl.
The top order faced a formidable bowling attack and both openers fell in the first few overs. Mitchell P and Micah A then steadied the ship with a solid 36 run partnership, ticking the score along with some intelligent and classy batting.
After 3 quick wickets, it was Year 11 students Mitchell G and Dexter C who then batted to the situation perfectly, looking for ones and twos and putting pressure on the Chisholm fielders, which forced mistakes and extra runs. Their partnership of 33 runs helped take the total past 100.
Mazenod finished their 20 overs at a respectable 6 for 102.
Top run scorers were:
Mitchell P 23 from 26 balls
Dexter C 22 from 27 balls
Micah A 16 from 19 balls
Mitchell G 13 from 17 balls
The team was confident as they took the field to defend their total. Vic G started the demolition of the Chisholm batting line up, taking 2 for 7 from his 4 overs in an inspired performance of fast bowling. Then it was Micah A (the Wizard) who utilised the very well placed fielders on his way to another swag of wickets taking 4 for 14 from his 4 overs. Cohen F chimed in with two excellent run outs, before skipper Nate T bamboozled the lower order, fittingly finishing Chisholm off with an impressive 2 for 2 from his 2.4 overs.
Chisholm crumbled under the relentless pressure the Mazenod boys applied as they were all out for 37 runs in 13.4 overs. Mazenod are through to the big dance. They will meet long time rivals Newman College in the competition grand final, after Newman defeated Kent St SHS in the other semi.
The final will be played at the historic WACA ground on Thursday April 3 in a twilight game starting at 5:00pm.
All members of the Mazenod community are warmly invited to come along and support the team in their quest to become the 2025 Graeme Wood Shield 20/20 Cricket Division 1 Champions.
A special thank you to Mr Ellul for stepping in to assist with the team, for the semi final, in Mr Vallis’s absence.
Congratulations to the team for their outstanding performance in the competition so far which has earned them the opportunity to experience finals cricket at one of the best cricket grounds on earth. Win, lose or draw, be sure to enjoy the experience, do your best for the team and do the College proud.
