What’s Happening in Careers?

WAAPA

On Friday 21 March a representative from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University presented to students about opportunities available to study Performing Arts. It was great to hear that there are free workshops available for music students to help you prepare for your WACE exams, WAAPA audition, master your instrument, or just have fun.

Free Weekend Music Workshops

Year 10

This week Year 10 students started working on their Individual Pathway Plan (IPP) and also had a presentation from Construction Training Fund and Mrs Johnson. The presentations identified opportunities in the construction industry & through apprenticeships, and students were able to evaluate whether construction or an apprenticeship would be a good fit for them.

Pathway planning encourages students to explore, identify, evaluate, and reflect on the learning and work pathways available. Students will continue to be provided with opportunities to identify their aspirations, reflect upon their achievements, and set goals for continuing success in the lead-up to Year 11 subject selection.

Year 11

The Year 11 group split into university-bound and General/VET groups for our last session. The university-bound students had a presentation from Curtin and ECU about university life, their courses and entry options.

The General/VET group had a presentation from Mrs Johnson about preparing for Workplace Learning.

Year 12

The Year 12 group split into university-bound and General/VET groups for our last session. The university-bound students had a presentation from three ‘Old Boys’ about university life, their courses and entry options. It was refreshing for the students to hear from ex-students who have taken paths that they will soon walk.

Tom Dunn (Class of ’22) and Nathan Taylor (Class of ’22) are both completing a double degree at Curtin, Tom is studying Geology and Finance, while Nathan is studying Geology and Biology. Johann De Boer (Class of ’22) is at UWA studying Commerce, majoring in accounting. We’re very appreciative of the ‘Old Boys’ coming in, they spoke with honesty about their choices and provided the Year 12s with much to think about.

The General/VET group had a presentation from Mrs Johnson about preparing for apprenticeships and how students can make themselves more competitive when applying for apprenticeships, TAFE, or the workforce.

We have been very busy conducting pathway discussions with our Year 12s. We have spoken to most of the boys now and it’s been interesting looking into the courses that the boys are considering! Ask your son if they have had a conversation with Mr Tuohy or Mrs Johnson yet and ask them about what they are considering.

TISC

TISC will open on 3 June.

The first Early Offers will be on Monday 1 September after the Semester One exams and most offers are conditional on meeting requirements.

Your TISC application is your Early Offer application – you will automatically be considered for your first preference. Most Early Offers will be made based on Year 11 results.

We have TISC coming to present on 6 May and I will run sessions with the boys on completing their preferences following their Semester 1 exams.

If students are intending to apply for university, they will need to apply through TISC. Registration is online and a fee of $95 is payable before they can set up their preferences. These preferences can be changed as many times as they like before the offers round.

Offers will be out before Christmas.
