From the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Staff and Friends of Mazenod College,

“Above all, bind yourself in love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colossians 3: 14).

A shining light in our College calendar each year is Harmony Week, a time in which we raise awareness and celebrate the diversity of culture and heritage in our community. I thank Mrs Bulich, Mrs Meerkotter and Miss Palmer who coordinated a host of activities including our Harmony Week Mural Project: Hands around the World, the Harmony Week – Everyone Belongs survey and the wearing of orange on Harmony Day last Friday, to foster a spirit of inclusivity, respect and a shared sense of belonging for everyone.

There were a number of events that I had the privilege to attend this week where the talents and gifts of our young men were on display. In the arena of sport, I got to see the exploits of our College Swim Team competing at the ACC ‘A’ Division Swimming Carnival held on Wednesday this week at the Perth High Performance Centre (formerly HBF Stadium). I am firm in the belief as I saw it for myself, the boys tried their very best and we are enormously proud and thankful that they accepted the invitation to represent our College at such an elite level. I acknowledge the wonderful work and commitment of Mr Mallon, Mr Mason and our fantastic swimmers.

Following the swimming, I had a cross-city trip to catch the second half of our senior boys’ preliminary final in the Graeme Wood Shield cricket match against Chisholm Catholic College. A strong victory assured our team of a place in the Grand Final next week – congratulations and best wishes to our First XI Cricket team and coaches, Mr Grabski and Mr Vallis.

The annual RAC bStreetsmart event was hosted in the city, attended by our Year 11 students on Tuesday. RAC have been hosting this free, annual event since 2012 in an effort to inform students about reducing risk taking behaviours and to demonstrate the consequences of distracted driving, speeding and drink and drug driving. Thank you to Mr Mallon, Mr Rogerson, Mr Wani, Mr Devon, Miss Lewis, Mr Thompson, and Mr Keogh for accompanying the students.

I am delighted to share that feedback from those in attendance at these recent events, including members of the public and organisers, who spoke glowingly about the behaviour of our students they had interacted with. Particularly, I was sought out at the swimming carnival by an ACC staff member, to acknowledge the organisation of the team and the respectful and dignified manner in which our swimmers conducted themselves.

Additionally, it was reported back to me that attendees at the RAC event, external to Mazenod, made the effort to share that the Year 11 boys at the RAC event, stood out for their respect, maturity and positive attitude. Thank you boys, we are incredibly proud of the way you represent our College and the reputation you are enhancing in the community.

“Be grateful for all the good the Lord helps us to accomplish” (St Eugene De Mazenod).

God bless.
