Sports Gala Day

Soccer

Move over 1999 Manchester United, Real Madrid Galactico's or Messi’s Barcelona there are 2 new super teams on the scene, the NMPS year 6 boys & girls soccer teams who vanquished all that dared to challenge them going 6 and zip at the first Summer Gala Day of the year scoring 33 goals and conceding only 1. On a delightful sunny autumn day at Fairbairn Park Ascot Vale the year six NMPS soccer teams took part in the first of 2 days of the inter school soccer tournament. The boys team consisted of Felix, Genya, Jacob, Kayden, Mannix, Matthew, Louis, Ollie, Riki, Ronin, Willem. The girls team included Amy D, Amy T, Angie, Charlotte, Grace, Harper, Jaz, Leni, Lillian, Medina, Natalia, Nawal and Sienna. Both teams would play 3 games each in the first half of the tournament.

NMPS Boys 7-0 Moonee Ponds West PS

The boys were first up against Moonee Pond Wests and put in a dominating performance winning 7-0. Genya started off the rout, scoring early before goals from Riki and a brace from Willem saw them 4-0 at the half. In the second half Mannix and Matthew scored goals before Riki rounded out the scoring with his second goal.

NMPS Girls 3-1 Moonee Ponds West PS

The girls continued on from the boys blistering start by producing a comfortable 3-1 over Moonee Ponds Wests girls team. Harper got NMPS off the mark quickly with a fine finish before Leni added the second goal before the half. Moonee Ponds Wests scored early in second which turned out to be the last and only goal NMPS would concede before Charlotte ensured the victory with a third goal.

NMPS Boys 4-0 St. Michaels PS

Up next the boys played local neighbours St. Michaels who also had a comfortable win in the opening round. The Manager Ben tasked the boys to out work and out run the boys from St. Michaels, expecting a close game but early goals to Matthew and another from Riki ensured a 2-0 lead at half. The boys didn’t let up in the second with Matthew scoring from a corner and Riki adding another to see the NMPS boys run out a comfortable victory with the goalkeeper Ronin hardly troubled.

NMPS Girls 5-0 St. Michaels PS

The girls ensured NMPS did the double over our close rivals at St. Michaels with a domineering win. Leni scored a first half hat-trick before Medina added a fourth goal just before the half. In the second half the relentless pressure by NMPS continued with shots on goals galore but the St. Michaels Keeper stopped everything. Leni eventually unpicked the defence with a great run to score her fourth goal of the game.

NMPS Boys 10-0 Holy Rosary PS

The boys finished their slate of games for the day with a performance not seen since Australia’s crushing defeat of India in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Final. Louis scored in the first 15 seconds with a fine finish before Ronin did his best Jose Luis Chivalert impersonation by stepping up as the goalkeeper to convert a penalty. Ollie scored the third of the half amidst chaos in the box. In the second half the boys ran riot with Riki coming off the bench to score 5 goals and Louis completing his hat-trick with 2 goals, to ensure double digits were reached.

NMPS Girls 4-0 Holy Rosary PS

The girls rounded out the day with a comfortable victory over Holy Rosary to ensure NMPS and Manager Ben went a perfect 6 from 6 on the day. Harper scored early with an incredible goal in which she dribbled, fell down and got up in a blink of an eye and finished powerfully. In the second half Nawal had her penalty kick denied by the post, before the offensive pressure applied by NMPS resulted in an own goal from Holy Rosary. Medina and Jaz produced two fine long range finishes late in the game to ensure another win.

At the end of the day both the teams found themselves first on the table with two more games to come. Next Tuesday NMPS will look to renew their bitter rivalry with Kensington PS in the Moonee Ponds Creek Derby before hopefully an appearance in the final. Overall all the players made NMPS proud with their spectacular soccer skills and excellent sportsmanship and Ben ensured all his hours spent playing Football Manager on PC was not wasted. Well done on a fantastic day year 6.
