Our Friendship Books: A German Tradition!

Have you ever wanted to keep a special record of all your friends? In Germany, children have a wonderful tradition called a "Freundebuch," which means "friend book"! It's a bit like a memory book filled with fun facts and kind messages from your classmates.

This term, our Year 2s have been learning lots of new German words to describe themselves and their friends. We've been practising how to say things like "Meine Augenfarbe ist..." (my eye colour is…), and "Mein Haarfarbe..." (my hair colour is…). . We can ask each other when our birthdays are and answer in a German sentence "Mein Geburtstag ist im..." (My birthday is in...) to say the month of our birthday as well as say our age. “Ich bin….. Jahre alt.” (I am …. Years old.)

We know how to talk about some of our favourite things eg. Mein Lieblingshobby… (my favourite hobby), mein Lieblingsessen (my favourite food), mein Lieblingstier (my favourite animal) and meine Lieblingsfarbe (my favourite colour). We are also learning adjectives to describe our friends’ personalities.

We've been doing lots of speaking to tell our friends all about ourselves and our next step is to record this in our Freundebuch. To put our new language skills to the test, students have their very own "Freundebuch," just like children in Germany! Our task is to use all the German words we've learned to accurately record information about ourselves and our friends.

By carefully filling in the Freundebuch, we'll be showing how well we understand and can use our new vocabulary. Students will also be able to read their friends' pages and take the books home to share our German learning with their family and friends. This is a fantastic way to practise our German and create a special keepsake and souvenir of our friendships and German learning this term.
