Specialists Updates and Celebrations

Messages from our Specialist team (P.E., Art, Music and Mandarin) and Library...

Physical Education (Prep)

In P.E. this week, Prep have been practising their throwing skills. This week we focused on how to throw using an underarm technique. We worked within our small groups throwing beanbags into different coloured hoops and trying to his cones and cricket bases over. Each hoop was worth a different number of points (1 red, 2 blue, 3 yellow). The children had lots of fun aiming and throwing towards different objects and we are looking forward to developing these skills further next term with some passing and receiving activities.

Performing Arts (Years 1 and 2)

This week in Drama, our Year 1 and 2 students have been diving into the world of storytelling through performance. We've been learning how to use facial expressions to show emotions and how to create freeze frames to capture important story moments with our bodies. The students especially enjoyed exploring puppetry, using their voices in creative ways to bring different characters to life.

Environmental Education (Years 3 and 4)

This week, the Year 3 and 4 students have been continuing to learn about ecosystems. So far, they have learnt about the Australian bush and desert. This week, we began to learn about the Great Barrier Reef. Students have learnt about the non-living and living things that inhabit this ecosystem and how they depend on each other. They collected materials such as sticks and dead leaves so that next week, they can create their own model of the Great Barrier Reef.

Visual Arts (Years 5 and 6)

The Year 5 and 6 students delighted in exploring watercolour landscapes as part of their Aboriginal Australian art studies unit. This lesson centered around the renowned Indigenous Australian artist Albert Namatjira, celebrated for his skill in depicting the stunning terrain of Central Australia's Western MacDonnell Ranges. Guided by a photograph from Namatjira's home, the students meticulously crafted their watercolour paintings, focusing on precision and achieving the right water-to-paint ratio. I was immensely proud of their remarkable artworks and their deep respect for learning about Indigenous culture.

Library

This week the library has reopened! The new shelving has been installed, and the books have been rearranged to better suit the new layout. Students have been visiting the library with their classes to read and borrow books. The library is also open at recess and lunch for students who want a calm space to read and draw.
