What's on in 1/2

Harmony Day is always a highlight for teachers and students alike, as we get the opportunity to learn about the diverse cultures and experiences of our school community. It is a day that brings with it vibrance, celebration, and learning. This year, it was made even more exciting thanks to our wonderful volunteers who prepared a delicious fried rice lunch and a spectacular Fan Dance Performance.

Enjoy a few poems written by our Grade 1/2 students, inspired by R. Sullivan and Katrina Germein’s book Tell ‘em.

I know what you should tell them… Tell them that each year we stand in our front yard watching fireworks. Tell them that each New Year our grandparents give us money. Tell them that our family is from China, Korea, and Japan. What else should we tell them? Tell them that our favourite food is dumplings. Tell them that we celebrate Christmas. Tell them that red is a special colour in our culture. Tell them all those things, just tell them, you tell them. By Alexis

I know what you should tell them… Tell them that when we celebrate, we go to a festival that is Lebanese. Tell them that I go to my Grandma’s house and wear fancy necklaces and dress up. Tell them we dance all day until we get tired. What else should we tell them? Tell them we act at night. Tell them we set the table with Lebanese cups. Tell them I love them. Tell them all those things, just tell them, you tell them. By Nari

I know what you should tell them… Tell them when it is summer, we go to a fire festival because our whole culture is there. Tell them when it is Persian New Year, we celebrate by eating food from our culture. Tell them all those things, you tell them, just tell them.
