Keeping the Spark Alive: Why a Little Holiday Practice Goes a Long Way

As we approach the two-week holiday break, everyone is looking forward to a well-deserved rest. No alarms, no school lunches to pack, and plenty of time for family fun.

While taking a break from the classroom routine is incredibly important for recharging, completely hitting the pause button on learning can lead to what teachers call the "holiday slide"—where students lose some of the academic momentum they worked so hard to build this term.

The good news? It doesn't take hours of worksheets or structured school time to keep your child's brain active. Just a small, consistent effort over the next two weeks can make a massive difference when they walk back through the classroom doors next term.

The Power of "Micro-Learning"

Research consistently shows that brief, regular practice is far more effective for long-term memory than cramming. Think of it like training a muscle: a little bit of daily exercise keeps it strong.

  • Reading (15-20 minutes a day): Reading just one chapter or a short book a day maintains vocabulary growth, comprehension, and reading stamina. It also reduces stress and helps kids unwind.
  • Basic Maths (5-10 minutes a day): Keeping up with basic addition, subtraction, or times tables keeps these skills "top of mind." When children know their basic facts automatically, it frees up their brainpower for the harder problem-solving they will face next term.

The 20-Minute Goal: Our target isn't to recreate school at home. If you can help your child find just 20 total minutes a day for a quick story and a maths game, you will set them up for a confident, stress-free return to school.

Thank you for your incredible, ongoing partnership in your child's education. Have a safe, happy, and relaxing holiday break!

Don't forget our Learning Conferences

Dont forget to book in for our upcoming Learning Conferences. Teachers have been working hard to collect, analyse and create slideshows of each child's individual progress over the first half of the year. If you have not booked in book your slot now so teachers can organise their timetable over the 2 days.

How to Book Your Slot

Conferences will be held on June 23rd and 24th. We ask if possible that you collect your child at 1pm on Wednesday, June 24th to allow teachers to begin their conferences at 1:30pm. Further information about this will be shared in the next few weeks.
