One hundred years ago this week, on 24 June 1926, the Governor-General of Australia, Lord Stonehaven, and Lady Stonehaven visited the newly opened Wolaroi College in what was described as the “first chapter of its new history.”
Addressing the boys, His Excellency spoke of how fortunate they were to enjoy opportunities and advantages not so widely available in other parts of the world. He emphasised the importance of service, urging the students to make a meaningful contribution to society. Such privileges, he reminded them, carried with them significant responsibilities: the obligation not only to play, but also to work in a spirit of loyalty and commitment to their country. He concluded his remarks with two simple words: “no slacking.”
A century later, those words still resonate. Looking back over the past 100 years, we can rightly claim that Kinross Wolaroi has lived up to that challenge through the efforts, achievements and service of generations of students, staff and families.
By coincidence, 24 June also marks the opening of Wyvern House exactly 100 years later. The alignment of these two significant milestones serves as a powerful reminder that the vision, commitment and aspirations of those who have gone before us continue to shape our community today.
As we celebrate both our history and our future, we can say with confidence that there has been “no slacking” in the pursuit of the hopes and dreams that inspired our beginnings a century ago.
