Our Year 4 students recently enjoyed an unforgettable day exploring the thrill of Puffing Billy and the history of steam trains in the Dandenong Ranges. From the moment we arrived, excitement filled the air as students stepped back in time to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of a working steam railway.
The day began at Belgrave Station, where we met our guide, Peta, and learned about the history of Puffing Billy. The students were especially impressed to know that many of the Puffing Billy staff are volunteers who generously give their time to keep the heritage railway running. Tristan remarked that meeting the staff was a highlight, and Addison thoroughly enjoyed seeing the engine up close. After a fascinating discussion, we boarded the train for our adventure.
The train ride itself was a highlight for all. Grace mentioned how much she loved sitting with her friends. As the whistle blew and the carriages began to move, our students waved to people in passing cars and watched the scenery unfold around them. Sam noticed how “the rosellas would come close to the carriages for a close look,” while others kept their eyes peeled for sheep, alpacas, and other wildlife along the journey. Although students in school groups can’t dangle their legs from the carriages, everyone enjoyed posing for a photo before departure and feeling the wind rush by as the train travelled across the historic bridge.
At the Emerald Lake Steam Museum, our students marvelled at the impressive collection of locomotives and equipment. Reuben enjoyed reading the information displayed on the wall about the parts of the old trains. Many were fascinated by the original 3A steam train on display, which offered a glimpse into the earliest days of rail travel in Australia. Nate was in awe of the steam coming out of the display train - “it looked like a dragon!” Peta led a lively and informative educational tour about the history of steam trains and their role in connecting communities. Nadia commented that Peta “was funny and she knows so much about Puffing Billy,” and many students agreed that her stories made history come alive. Students also loved dressing up as Station Masters and learning about life on the railway through hands-on activities.
After the ride, we enjoyed lunch in the Boathouse Shelter and spent some time on the fun playground. Spencer said “having lunch in the boathouse shelter and playing on the playground at Emerald Lake” were particular highlights, while many summed up the day perfectly as “an amazing experience!”
Alongside the students’ eagerness to ride Puffing Billy again, we were presented with a piece of coal as a special class memento—a reminder of a day filled with learning, laughter, and lasting memories.
