Maths Olympiad Results

Last week we received our official results from the Australian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad program. We had 56 students across Years Four, Five and Six take part in the competition, which is designed to extend and promote students who excel in the subject of Mathematics. This was the tenth year in which students at St Joseph's have taken part in the competition, and yet again, our students have achieved incredible results for which they should be very proud.
As a school, our team of students finished in the top 10% of all schools who took part in the competition. We also managed to finish within the top 100 schools in Australia who took part in the event. A wonderful achievement and one we’re very proud of. This takes into account the scores and performance of all the students in the group that took part this year.
Over 37,000 primary-school aged students took part in the Olympiads this year, of which, only 208 achieved a perfect score. We’re very proud to share that Spencer and Arran not only topped the St Joseph's tally, but were one of these 208 students across Australia and New Zealand. This is an incredible effort that was achieved through an exceptional desire to improve and develop throughout every lesson across the two terms of the program.
Both Arran and Spencer will have their names engraved on our new perpetual trophy recently donated to the school by the Jamsek family. This shield recognises the students who have achieved a perfect score in the Maths Olympiad competition while attending St Joseph's. We have had seven students over the past ten years achieve this feat. Amazingly, Spencer achieved this as both a Year Five and Year Six student. We sincerely thank the Jamsek family for their generous donation.
Alongside Spencer and Arran, we also had Joshua, Kira, Rosa, Amelie, Maddie, Clementine and Zach who were also acknowledged for their efforts. These students achieved a score in the top 10% of the competition. A wonderful achievement. Ava S, Ava C, Charles, Ben, Maia W, Zoe M, Maxi K, Maya M, Jasmine, Rex, Seb, Ethan, George, Harriet, Nate, Jacob, Arlo and Hector were also celebrated for achieving a score in the top 25% of the competition. These scores are compared to all students who took part in the program across Australia and New Zealand.
As part of our weekly Maths Olympiad sessions at school, we also run an inter-school competition with the students working in teams to earn points. This aims to develop the collaboration and teamwork skills of the students. This year the team of Spencer, Arran, Liam, Charles and Zach were the winners. We have a perpetual shield to recognise the winners of this annual competition, which we have engraved with the names of the students in recognition of their work in this area.
We also had Penelope and Remy receive special achievement awards for their dedication and effort during all Maths Olympiad sessions this year. These students demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment to improving as learners, always seeking feedback and eagerly awaiting their results. These two students demonstrated the type of learning approaches we love to see in our students at St Joseph's.
We congratulate all of our students who took part in the Maths Olympiad competition this year and we look forward to competing again in 2026.

Deputy Principal, Teaching and Learning Leader and Senior Mathematics Leader
