Hello from the Autism Inclusion Teacher,
Autism Inclusion Teacher Conference 2025
On Monday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2025 Autism Inclusion Teacher Conference. It was a day filled with learning, sharing, and connecting with other teachers from across the state.
The keynote speaker was Sonny Jane Wise, a passionate advocate, educator, and author. Sonny spoke about Neurodiversity Affirming Practice, sharing key ideas to help us support autistic learners. These included: nurturing positive self-identity, encouraging self-advocacy, respecting all forms of communication, presuming competence, challenging “one-size-fits-all” ways of thinking, and honouring each child’s autonomy. Sonny reminded us that neurodivergence is a valuable part of human diversity, and shared practical ways schools can create spaces where all students feel respected and valued.
One of the breakout sessions I attended was led by Alison Vivian from Purple Orange, a South Australian organisation that works to advance the rights and opportunities of people living with disability. Alison spoke about the transition from primary to secondary school from a parent’s perspective, highlighting the importance of clear communication, preparation, and teamwork between families and schools.
Another breakout session was presented by Sarah Bradbury, Assistant Director in the Teaching and Learning Directorate. Sarah spoke about Learner Voice to Agency, focusing on how schools can empower students by listening to their ideas and making sure their voices help shape their learning. This message was especially powerful for supporting our neurodiverse learners to feel heard and valued.
A real highlight of the day for me was connecting with other Autism Inclusion Teachers. Sharing experiences, strategies, and challenges created a sense of teamwork and reminded me that we are all working together to make schools more inclusive.
I am excited to bring these ideas back to our school, ensuring that the principles of inclusion, student voice, and family partnership continue to guide the way we support our learners every day.
Wishing everyone a fabulous break!
