Article by Tanya Ogden, Junior School Visual Arts Teacher
In Semester 2, the Year 3 students were introduced to a unit of work about dragons through CCL and literacy in their classroom. The Art Department decided to create a piece of artwork depicting a dragon’s eye to link in with this topic.
The students used Magiclay to model a dragon’s eye. They began with a creature eye as a base and then applied Magiclay to create different shapes and details to make the eye appear as though it belonged to a dragon.
In the first lesson, students looked at images of dragon eyes and discussed which art elements could be seen and where. They described colours, shapes and textures, then planned and drew their own unique designs in their sketchbooks.
A demonstration was given on how to create coils, spheres and spirals, and how shapes could be modelled and joined together to create form. Students chose a creature eye and explored the shapes that could be made with Magiclay to create the base for their eyes, adding eyelids and then building their designs from that base.
On reflection, students looked at each other’s designs and wrote about the process they went through to create their work; how they modelled shapes and combined them to create form. As an extension, some students also drew their own dragons using oil pastels, considering colour placement, tone and blending in their artwork.
A display is located near the Year 3 classrooms showcasing their amazing dragon eye designs.
