Teaching & Learning

Term 2 at Epping Secondary College has been a vibrant celebration of learning, with students engaging in rich, hands-on experiences. Across all year levels, students have continued to demonstrate curiosity, creativity, resilience, and pride in their learning.
Science in Action – Year 8
Our Year 8 students have been bringing Science to life through exciting investigations into static electricity using the Van de Graaff generator. The classroom was filled with energy and laughter as students explored scientific concepts through inquiry-based, practical learning—complete with some truly memorable hair-raising moments!
Year 10 Chemistry in the Kitchen
Our Year 10 Chemistry students have also been exploring real-world applications of science through hands-on learning in the kitchen. A standout investigation had students testing the effects of acids on different materials. Turns out, if you pour acid on a marble benchtop… it doesn’t just stain it — it literally dissolves it!
Innovation in Technology and Engineering – Year 9
Year 9 students have embraced applied learning with enthusiasm and creativity.
Engineering students designed and constructed their own dragster cars, integrating circuit wiring, 3D printing, design thinking, and problem-solving skills. Their learning culminated in an exciting race day where designs were put to the test. Students in the Full Steam Ahead program also participated in a hands-on excursion to Whittlesea Tech School. There, they collaborated to design interactive toys, demonstrating impressive teamwork, resilience, and innovative thinking when challenges arose.
Creativity in the Arts
Our Year 9 Ceramics students have been busy developing their artistic skills, producing beautifully crafted ceramic pots and Indigenous-inspired dishes. Their work reflects both technical growth and thoughtful engagement with cultural influences. We’re so proud of their hard work and artistic talent.
VCE Media – Learning Beyond the Classroom
Our VCE Media students extended their learning through an inspiring excursion to ACMI’s Story of the Moving Image exhibition and the prestigious Top Screen showcase. Students explored outstanding student productions from across Victoria and engaged with emerging filmmakers, gaining valuable insight and inspiration for their own media creations.
Business and Enterprise in Practice
VCE Business Management students participated in an excursion to Sovereign Hill, using the site as a real-world case study of a not-for-profit business. Students explored how business ideas are developed through innovation and entrepreneurship while also enjoying the rich historical environment, including goldfields and iconic local attractions.
12VM WRS MCG Industry Visit Excursion
As part of our recent learning program, students participated in an educational excursion to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where they explored the Australian Sports Museum, took part in the interactive “Game On” area, and completed a guided stadium tour. Students gained insight into Australia’s sporting history through a range of artefacts and resources, including the Australian Sports Library, and learned behind-the-scenes details about stadium operations such as turf management, lighting systems, and the significance of the red seat marking the longest cricket hit. They also engaged with the cultural history of the site, including its significance to the Wurundjeri people as a traditional gathering place. Throughout the day, students demonstrated strong teamwork, listening, and respectful behaviour, while also gaining an understanding of the diverse career pathways involved in running a major sporting venue, including roles in security, hospitality, groundskeeping, cleaning, and event management.
Victorian Students’ Parliamentary Program
A group of students from Year 9 & 10 recently participated in the Victorian Schools Parliamentary Convention, a one-day educational experience held at the Parliament of Victoria. The event provided an authentic simulation of parliamentary debate, centred on the contemporary issue: “Should governments regulate the use of facial recognition technology?”
Throughout the day, students stepped into the role of Members of Parliament and engaged in a range of parliamentary processes. Overall, the experience provided students with a meaningful opportunity to actively participate in democracy and further develop their understanding of their responsibilities as informed and engaged citizens.
Our Year 9 Full Steam Ahead students were lucky to be involved in a hands-on excursion to Whittlesea Tech School. Their challenge was to design an interactive toy. Their ability to problem solve when things didn’t quite work out was most impressive
New Facilities – Industrial Kitchens
We are excited to announce the upcoming launch of our brand-new, state-of-the-art industrial kitchens. These modern learning spaces feature stainless steel workstations, advanced appliances, custom preparation areas, and integrated projection systems that allow students to follow live demonstrations in real time. These facilities will provide authentic, industry-standard experiences where students can build confidence, develop practical hospitality skills, and explore future pathways in food and technology. Our student leaders are currently assisting with final preparations ahead of the official launch.
ANZAC Day
Our school community paused to reflect on ANZAC Day, honouring the courage, sacrifice, and mateship of all who served in times of conflict, including soldiers, nurses, and those who provided vital support during WWI and WWII, as well as all who continue to serve today.
Student Leaders, alongside College Principal Mr Baillie, laid a wreath in tribute to the fallen and read the Ode of Remembrance. Students observed a minute’s silence and listened respectfully to the Last Post. We are proud of the respectful way our students marked this important day. Additionally, Student Leaders and Mrs Mesquita attended the 6am ANZAC Service on Saturday 25 April at Epping RSL, representing the College with pride and respect during ANZAC Day commemorations.

Sporting Excellence
We are incredibly proud to share that our student, Sebastian Gigliotti-Sevas, has been selected for the Under 15s NFNL Team and has also been appointed Vice Captain.
Sebastian has continued to work exceptionally hard and is going back-to-back with this achievement after previously playing for the Under 14 A Team last year. His dedication, discipline, and commitment both on and off the field continue to shine through, and this recognition is a well-deserved reward for his efforts.
Congratulations, Sebastian, on this fantastic accomplishment.
We wish you every success for the season ahead!
