Co-regulation:
Mental Health and Wellbeing
What It Is and What It Can Look Like at School and at Home
At Ormond Primary School, our staff work closely together to support students’ emotional wellbeing through co-regulation.
Co-regulation is the process of an adult supporting a child to understand and manage their emotions, behaviours and reactions. Before children can self-regulate independently, they need repeated experiences of being guided, soothed and supported by a calm, responsive and regulated adult.
When a child is overwhelmed, whether excited, frustrated, anxious or upset they often cannot “just calm down” on their own. Co-regulation is how we step in alongside them, helping them feel safe and settled so they can regain control.
Some co-regulation strategies can be different for home, here are some suggestions.
Support can look like…
A hug

Offering a quiet room

Offering a safe quiet place for them to lie down

Just sitting nearby

Water

Walking together
