Book of the Week

Wool

by Hugh Howey

In the future, all people live deep underground in a giant silo. To go outside – or even just to wish to go outside – means certain death.

When the silo’s respected sheriff, Holston Becker, elects to go outside, the mayor is forced to find a new candidate to fill the role. She selects Juliette, a lowly engineer from the “Deep Down”, a choice that turns out to be far more dangerous than she could ever have imagined. Juliette proves to be very capable in her job, and she soon makes an enemy in the head of IT, Bernard. Forced into an unwinnable situation, Juliette sets out to discover the truth about her silo and to uncover the secrets Bernard is desperate to keep buried.

Wool is an enthralling dystopian thriller about a terrifying future and the consequences of centuries of lies. Juliette is very compelling character, and the world of her silo is extremely well-written and interesting. If you like reading futuristic or dystopian stories, I thoroughly recommend this! There are two sequels to Wool – Shift and Dust – both are well-worth reading and are available at Geelong Regional Libraries.

Recommended for older readers.

The eAudiobook version is available on the BHS ePlatform.
