On Wednesday 13th of May, I had the pleasure of taking 22 Year 9 SEALP students to the Model UN day hosted by Geelong High. This was a first for Belmont High and an event I have no doubt we will take part in again. Belmont HS, along with 6 other High Schools discussed the contentious topic of AI and Human Rights which proved to be a divisive topic. Prior to the event, students were required to undertake a great deal of research and preparation, including developing a Position Statement which was read out to the entire UN General Assembly.

Our students were allocated the countries of Estonia, Pakistan, Chile, Madagascar, South Africa and France and represented these countries as delegate officials. Our students did extremely well on the day, going up against Year 12 students and select entry schools from the wider region, proving once again that Belmont High students are incredibly well rounded and capable students.

I was very proud in particular of the high levels of maturity, respect and aptitude our students showcased, as they navigated their way through a number of complicated UN General Assembly agendas. Congratulations 9 SEALP on what was certainly an enriching and entertaining day.

Student Excellence Update – May 2026

Big Science Competition – Student Report

Last Thursday, the Year 8 SEALP class all competed in 2026 Big Science Competition. The Big Science Competition is an online science quiz that consists of 35 questions with a time limit of 50 minutes on a NAPLAN style browser. All questions are multiple choice and relate to many different topics from physics and chemistry to astronomy and environmental science. Finding the solution to each question involves utilising your problem-solving skills and strategies. It is an exciting opportunity that extends and challenges your scientific thinking, while also allowing you to compete against others, show your skills and be rewarded for your achievements. We will find out our results over the next couple of weeks.

Study Habits that Work / Supported Study Sessions (Year 12s)

On Thursday 21st May, Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to participate in a lunchtime skill-building session focused on “Study Habits that Work.” With input from past students, I created a workshop highlighting four key habits that have proven effective for VCE students. The key areas discussed were:

  1. Plan your time with purpose
  2. Use active study techniques
  3. Avoid burnout
  4. Set up your learning environment

We had a great turnout, with over 30 students attending and actively engaging with the presentation and practical tips.

As a follow-up, four former Belmont High students who achieved outstanding VCE results in 2025 will be available in the Year 12 Common Room during Periods 3 and 4 every

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the remainder of Term 2. They will help mentor our Year 12 students in effective study techniques.

They will be available to:

✅ Help with effective study techniques and organisation

✅ Share strategies that worked for them during VCE

✅ Offer support with study planning and revision

✅ Assist with subject-specific questions where possible
