4F

By Lily O'Shaughnessy

This term in Inquiry, 4F has been exploring the big question:

“How do chemicals impact life on Earth?”

Students have been learning about the different states of matter — solids, liquids and gases — and investigating how materials can change and behave in different ways.

One of our favourite learning experiences was making Oobleck! Students combined cornflour and water to create a very unusual substance that acts like both a solid and a liquid. When squeezed or pressed quickly, the oobleck became hard like a solid, but when held gently, it flowed like a liquid.

When reflecting on their work students shared:

  • “I learnt that Oobleck is hard if you add force and liquid if you add less force!” - Reyansh
  • “I learnt that Oobleck is very strong and I was very excited working with Oobleck and touching it” – Laksh
  • “I found it super interesting that one material can be two different states of matter.” -Alina
  • “Oobleck is like your life when your hard to it your life is hard but if you be gentle, careful and patient it would be soft” – Vincent
  • “The Oobleck reacts to the pressure of how hard you press on it. I had fun because it was very interesting.” – Karl

4F showed fantastic curiosity, teamwork and excitemment during our investigations. I am proud of the thoughtful questions students asked and the enthusiasm they brought to their learning.

As a class we are looking forward to continuing our Inquiry journey as we discover more about how chemicals and materials affect the world around us!
