Deputy Principal's Report

Feeling depleted? We hear you.

We recognise that this time of year can pose challenges for everyone. Our daily routines are disrupted, energy levels may be depleted, and there's a sense of change in the air. While many of us can navigate through these circumstances reasonably well,  some members of our school community need us to know and understand that this is a pretty tricky time for them.

Taking a moment to reflect on this, it raises the question of whether our expectations for children, especially those with neurodiverse needs, might be too demanding during this time. These can be children who manage anxiety on a daily basis, those who have ADHD and executive functioingn challenges, kids who may have sensory or congitive overload. Whatever the need is, it usually is not obvious. We tend to see these needs played out through behaviour.

Instead of trying to force these individuals into a one-size-fits-all approach, it's vital that we become advocates for them. We can offer support in a variety of ways. This may involve limiting post-school conversations and providing them with space to decompress. Routine, routine, routine! It is tough at this time of year - but wherever you can try to keep it in place. But most importantly, let them know that you get it, you hear them and we are all here to help.

We recently discovered a transition menu on www.theadhdtoolkit.com that presents various options for managing situations when children are feeling depleted, particulary at the end of the school day. This resource is grounded in the Spoon Theory and could offer valuable insights and strategies for your home routine.

Up Day Tomorrow

The long anticipated Up Morning is commencing tomorrow from 9:15 am to 11 am. Your child will find out their 2024 classroom teacher and classmates and spend the morning getting to know one another, what to expect for the year ahead and have the opportuntiy to ask any questions if they have any. The school has diligently navigated various processes to organise these class lists, understanding that achieving a perfect solution for every class dynamic can be challenging. As your children come home to share the news, we encourage you to encourage a growth mindset, understanding that each class arrangement presents an opportunity for growth and learning. Remember, we are here to support you and ensure a smooth transition into 2024. If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thanks again for all your support,
