Year 10 Media

For their final assessment, Homestead’s own year 10 media class wrote, planned, directed, acted, produced and filmed a short thriller film. Just in time for Halloween, the goal was to manipulate and adapt production and story elements to satisfy the tropes and characteristics of a spooky, chilling narrative. They worked on the pre-production stage such as storyboarding and creating shot lists. They produced using lighting, props, camera techniques, dialogue and acting. They edited using industry standard editing cuts. The result of this hard work is a range of creative, exciting and spine-tingling stories. Check out two films based on the film prompts ‘Files’ and  ‘Alone’.

Western Melbourne Region Athletics

On Tuesday the 10th of October, students from Homestead participated in the Western Metropolitan Athletics Carnival in Mooney Valley. The WMR Athletics Carnival brought together students from various schools, creating a vibrant atmosphere of competition and sportsmanship. Our students demonstrated not only their athletic skills but also their commitment to represent all the schools’ values. This athletics carnival was the final Inter-school Sport for the year and I would like to thank all of the students who participated in the variety of sports, that were held in 2023. All represented Homestead Senior Secondary College with such pride and we are extremely proud of you all. Now we look forward to a successful 2024!

Year 10 SEPEP

Over these past few weeks, the Year 10 HPE & Fitness classes joined together and took the responsibility of running the class for our SEPEP unit. This unit definitely made us as students realise that being a teacher is not easy. This also showed that us as students had a big responsibility and all groups overcome many challenges along the way. Both classes worked together, formed groups, assigned different roles for different leaders in the group and then came up with a game to present to the class, you could pick from any sport, basketball, cricket, netball or whatever your choice might be. All of these games presented by each different group showed great teamwork, communication, skills and leadershipsI enjoyed this unit so much as it got everyone involved and made us put ourselves in the shoes of a teacher for a day.

Year 11 Psychology Zoo Excursion

On Friday the 13th of October, Unit 2 Psychology students went to the zoo to study animal behaviour and analyse ethical principles in caring for captive animals.

We went to visit the Melbourne Zoo via train, getting off at Royal Park Station as an excursion on animal rights in captivity.  The green environment, friendly zookeepers and a wide variety of thriving animals made the day an interesting one as we toured around. We were taught on how zoo professionals kept animals in captivity whilst sustaining the characteristics of their natural wild habitats, the scientific method surrounding animal

psychology, as well as how they dealt with animal endangerment in terms of the rights of animals.

The zookeeper's there at Melbourne Zoo had a great deal and passion for animals as their profession to care for them, and their friendliness in guiding and educating us around the area gave us an engaging and fun experience. As we explored the zoo, the animals were out and about, going about their own business while we observed and adored them in their natural state right up close. This excursion, (aside the pricey food), was a fun one to roam around, especially as one of our last excursions ever for the year 11's!

Community Kindness Shines Through at Jewellery Stalls Fundraiser

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our incredible school community for their overwhelming support and generosity during our recent fundraising event for our Community Kindness Project. On Friday, the 13th of October, two exceptional student groups, VCE VM Y11 students, came together with the approval of the School Council to host Jewellery Stalls as a part of our ongoing effort to raise funds for selected charities. In less than 20 minutes during recess and 25 minutes at lunchtime, our compassionate students managed to raise an astonishing amount of money for these worthy causes.

The journey towards our successful fundraising event began with a significant step – the VCE VM group's presentation of their elevator pitch to the School Council. Their  enthusiasm and dedication were truly remarkable, and we are grateful for the Council's support and approval, which allowed this event to take place.

The two student groups selected charities close to their hearts. The first group, ‘DJH Apparel’, decided to contribute to 'Mental Health Australia' in honour of 'World Mental Health Day'. Their choice reflects our commitment to promoting mental well-being, and you can learn more about this organisation's impactful work at MENTAL HEALTH AUSTRALIA. In an astonishingly brief time, they managed to raise $81, which will make a meaningful difference.

The second group, ‘M.A.R.C.Ks’, decided to support 'Save the Children', a charity dedicated to helping children in need. By donating jewellery for the stall free of charge, they ensured that every dollar raised would go to the cause. More information about this incredible organisation can be found at SAVE THE CHILDREN AUSTRALIA. In just 25 minutes, they raised a commendable $69.10.

We also want to express our gratitude to the staff members who donated products, supervised and attended and purchased products at these events, thank you for your unwavering support and guidance. This successful fundraiser would not have been possible without their dedication.

The funds raised by our students showcase the incredible impact of collective kindness and determination. The $150.10 raised will go directly to Mental Health Australia and Save the Children Australia, making a real difference in the lives of those they support.

We hope that everyone in our community appreciates the beautiful jewellery they purchased and the knowledge that their contributions will directly benefit these meaningful causes. The event was an undeniable success, thanks to the collective efforts of our school community. Your kindness and support remind us that together, we can shine a light of hope in the world, one fundraiser at a time. Thank you for your unwavering support, and let's continue to make a difference together.

Becoming a Seargent-Elle Harding

The Homestead community would like to congratulate Elle Harding on achieving the status of Seargent. This is an incredible achievement and we are very proud of her.

To achieve this Elle first joined cadets in 2021 and became a corporal the following year. She worked hard in her squadron to promote herself in the best light by volunteering for every role possible and helping to solve issues in order to be chosen for a spot on the sergeant promotion course.

This course is an 8 day course where candidates live, learn and are assessed on a RAAF base for those eight days. When chosen for this course candidates are sorted into classes of 25 and in those classes are the people that you eat sleep and work alongside for the whole course, as well as responsible for the wellbeing of as each half day someone new is the orderly and responsible for making sure that class is where they need to be at the right time. They had a strict schedule of 6:00AM wakeup and expectations to be ready by 6:20AM. Candidates spent the whole day doing classes on topics like service knowledge, fieldcraft, leadership and drill.

Congratulations Elle!
